Description
The Controller supports the Director of Finance in all aspects of overseeing the accounting team, processing payroll, updating and maintaining sales and use tax documentation, and monthly financial reporting. A successful individual in this role will be adept at time-management, multi-tasking and managing competing priorities, have excellent interpersonal skills and strong attention to detail. Most of all, this individual should have the ability to routinely deal with confidential information appropriately and professionally.
Major Duties:
Provide leadership and coordination in accounting efforts to include overseeing accounts payable and accounts receivable operations.Manage and prepare bi-weekly payroll, including out-of-state employees, to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal requirements.Manage accounting system and CRM (as it relates to accounting department).Oversee Accounts Payable/Receivable Coordinator, Staff Accountant, Accounts Receivable Specialist, and assist with collections.Manage 401k deferral and submissions, preparation of bi-weekly deposits to 401(k) retirement plan.Oversee sales billing, including craft/pipeline module tests, assessments, annual maintenance fees, subscriptions, etc.Maintain asset and monthly depreciation schedules.Prepare monthly bank reconciliations.Maintain general ledger and prepare monthly general ledger account reconciliations.Manage payroll taxes, which includes out of state registration, employee benefits, and workers compensation insurance.Prepare sales and use tax returns including out of state registration, reporting, reconciliations and leading any state audits.Prepare quarterly employee HSA contributions.Oversee and manage all aspects of compliance with federal, state, and local laws applicable to sales, use, and other taxes, including review and maintain customer sales tax exemption certificates and apply for and maintain multi-state sales tax exempt status for NCCER.Assist in the preparation of monthly financial statements.Assist with annual budgeting.Assist with the annual preparation of Form 990.Assist with annual financial audit.Complete other duties as assigned; this job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities required of the employee.
Requirements
Bachelor's degree or higher in Accounting or a related fieldExperience working in multi-state sales and use tax compliance, with a strong preference for candidates with experience with taxability of digital products and SaaS.Previous experience processing payroll preferred.Previous experience in the non-profit sector preferred.Strong interpersonal and professional communication skills (written and verbal)Excellent time management skills and attention to detailAbility to handle confidential information effectively and professionally.A self-starter with demonstrated experience handling multiple duties/priorities and deadlines.Ability to work independently and to work effectively with all levels of executives, management and staff is essential.Dependable in attendance and performance• Software Skills
Experience with Microsoft Office Suite software (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) required.Experience with Paylocity or similar HRIS platform(s) strongly preferred.Experience with NetSuite or Avalara preferred.Experience with sales tax automation preferred.
