Open Until FilledPosition Information:Under general direction of the Vivarium Operations Manager, the incumbent supports the administration and operations of the Campus Vivaria, which includes a specific pathogen-free (SPF) rodent facility with strict biosecurity practices and standards. Currently, there are several facilities supporting approximately 60 Principal Investigators (PIs) and housing ten animal species. The Vivarium Operations Supervisor will support the management of vivaria operations including directing environmental and routine care of all animals housed in the vivaria and ensuring and implementing changes in day-to-day operations as required to maintain continued compliance with the guidelines set forth by the various regulations (AWA, PHS Policies, Guide, etc.), and IACUC. The Supervisor will serve as a back-up for Lead Technicians across the campus vivaria and will ensure that entry level technicians are appropriately trained and assigned to cover daily operating functions in all campus vivaria while fostering a safe workplace.Requirements:Educational Requirements:Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training. RequiredMinimum Requirements:Working knowledge of animal care and safety and regulatory environments.Working knowledge of facility management.Basic skills in animal husbandry, record-keeping and inventory control.Basic skills in leadership, interpersonal communication, motivation of staff and team-building.Basic analytical and problem-solving skills.Computer competency.Basic ability to identify behavioral or health issues with animal(s) under care and report to vet or supervisor any changes or unusual behavior or physical issues that need attention.Demonstrated skills in performing para veterinary procedures including anesthetizing, bleeding, administering medications and injections, and euthanizing animals.Demonstrated knowledge of Federal, State and local health and safety regulations for Vivaria operations.Background and knowledge of modern laboratory animal husbandry including dogs, fish, cats, reptiles, rabbits, rodents, amphibians and avian species.Preferred Qualifications:Experience successfully applying AAALAC accreditation standards, along with research facility requirements used by the USDA, to provide professional guidance regarding planning and necessary maintenance.Experience in evaluating facility practices and design for regulatory compliance.Experience in IACUC protocol review process.Experience using electronic resources to produce teaching materials, documents, maintains animal care records and other information necessary to the mission of the laboratory animal program.Additional Information:In the Heart of Inland Southern California, UC Riverside is located on nearly 1,200 acres near Box Springs Mountain in Southern California; the park-like campus provides convenient access to the vibrant and growing Inland region.
