WSP is currently initiating a search for a Lead High Voltage Cable Specialist for our Boston, MA office. The following locations will also be considered: Newark, NJ; New York City, NY; and Atlanta, GA. Your Impact
  • We are looking for a specialist in high voltage underground and submarine transmission cable systems engineering.
  • Provide technical leadership to high voltage transmission projects, submarine and terrestrial.
  • Provide expert advice to the clients related to high voltage cables.
  • Perform and assess the ampacity calculations.
  • Create high voltage cable specifications.
  • Provide expert opinion about cable installation.
  • Evaluate cable suppliers' capabilities.
  • Technical review of cable supplier submissions.
  • Provide support to cable testing and commissioning.
  • Train and supervise junior cable engineers, as required.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Material Science, Applied Physics, or equivalent degree.
  • 10+ years of experience with high voltage cables.
  • Experience with high voltage cable specifications, design criteria and feasibility studies of new transmission cable projects, cable ratings studies, impedance calculations, induced sheath voltage calculations, pulling tension calculations, project cost estimates, and Operation & Maintenance (O&M) manuals with client specific information. Experience with high voltage cable systems of 138kV, 230kV, 345kV or 500kV AC, as well as HVDC cables.
  • Deep and up to date understanding of the high voltage cable technologies, insulation systems, manufacturing processes, and all other cable components. Understanding of the technology and its limitations. Understanding of construction methodologies for submarine and terrestrial cables.
  • The experience should also include factory inspections, cable and accessory manufacturing, production and sample tests, type tests and qualification tests. Witnessing sample, production, pre-qualification (PQ), and type testing of transmission cable systems.
  • Experienced in failure analysis, witnessing cable and accessory removal, and evidence preservation. Experienced with laboratory dissection and component testing.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Must be flexible to a variety of schedules to meet business needs and able to prioritize responsibilities and quickly adapt to change in a pressure work environment.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Professional engineering license is optional.
  • Membership and/or leadership role in cable related professional organizations is preferred.


Compensation and Benefits:

Expected Salary: $92,500 - $213,000
