Health and Information Management - Medical Coder

Required Experience:Experience working as a coder in nuclear medicine is HIGHLY PREFERREDExperience as a Medical Record AbstractorCertified as a Professional Coder from the American Academy of Professional Coders or equivalent national entity requiredMinimum 2 years' experience abstracting E/Ms required and abstracting surgical procedures preferredDetailed knowledge of Medical Terminology and its applicationDetailed knowledge and understanding of ICD-9, CPT, and HCPCS coding systemsKnowledge of CMS and local carrier regulations and requirements for documenting/billing physician services at a teaching hospitalWorking knowledge of anatomy and physiologyExtensive knowledge of Medical Record contentAbility to accurately assign ICD-9 and CPT codes requiredKnowledge of HIPAA requirementsSoft Skills:Ability to maintain the confidentiality of sensitive informationAbility to meet established continuing education requirements by attending required training workshops, reading materials assigned by AAPC in order to maintain yearly CEUs required for Certified Professional CoderAbility to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with physicians and staffSkill in working independently and following through on assignments with minimal supervisionSkill in prioritizing and performing a variety of dutiesOral communication skillsKnowledge of Microsoft Excel and WordGood command of English GrammarAgreeable attitude regarding assignment variety
