This is a full-time, academic year (9-month) tenure track position with 45% teaching, 45% research, and 10% service.

This position requires that the successful candidate develop a focused program of research, teaching, and service activities related to plant evolution and biodiversity (e.g., systematics, comparative biology, speciation, adaptation, phylogeography). Teaching responsibilities include an upper-level course on Plant Systematics, contributing to other courses in the curriculum as determined with the Department Head, and advising undergraduate and graduate students. The position also includes curating the Montana State herbarium (MONT), and performing appropriate university, professional, and public service relevant to the position.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Establish a successful research program related to plant diversity and evolution (e.g., systematics, comparative biology, speciation, adaptation, phylogeography), as demonstrated through publishing original research in refereed journals and other appropriate venues, supporting their research with extramural funding, and participating in relevant professional organizations.

The successful candidate is expected to teach an upper-level course on Plant Systematics, and contribute to courses in the curriculum, as determined with the Department Head.

Curate the Montana State herbarium (MONT).

Advise graduate and undergraduate students.

Perform appropriate university, professional, and public service relevant to the position.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills:

Ph.D. at time of appointment in a field relevant to the duties and responsibilities listed above.

Demonstrated potential for excellence in research, teaching, and service, commensurate with career level.

Demonstrated potential to successfully teach a Plant Systematics course.

Demonstrated potential to successfully curate the Montana State Herbarium (MONT).

Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills:

Demonstrated command of plant identification, taxonomy, and systematics.

Experience with plant collections/herbaria.

Demonstrated ability to incorporate modern genomic and bioinformatics techniques into research and teaching activities.

Previous research, teaching, and service experience relevant to the position description.

Demonstrated potential to secure extramural funding.

Evidence of successful collaboration and interaction with relevant academic groups, agencies, or industries.

Evidence of potential for successful advising and mentoring of graduate and undergraduate students.
