Burton is dedicated to high quality 21st century education.Job SummaryJob Description / Essential Elements: BURTON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DISTRICTBUS DRIVERJOB SUMMARYBus Driver will, under supervision of the Transportation Supervisor-Trainer, drive a school bus or transportation vehicle safely in the transportation of students, including: to and from school, field trips, athletic activities, and other special trips; maintain buses in a clean and safe condition.REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONSKnowledge of:District policies and procedures as they apply; Safe driving practices; Provisions of the California Motor Vehicle Code and Education Code applicable to the operation of vehicles in transporting school children; Public School Transportation rules, regulations and guidelines; Oral and written communication skills; Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.Ability to:Operate a school bus and other transportation vehicles in a safe and proper manner.Operate a variety of equipment, tools and machines in a safe and proper manner.Maintain appropriate student behavior on a school bus or other transportation vehicle.Maintain and verify accuracy and completeness of transportation requests.Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.Perform appropriately in situations requiring tact and diplomacy.Read, interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures.Meet schedules and deadlines.Plan and organize work.Keep and maintain records.Perform moderate physical exertion.Follow-through with directives.Education and Experience: Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school or possession of GED required; supplemented by six (6) months as a bus driver or one (1) year of general driving experience. Possession of a valid First Aid Certificate. Possession of a valid California Class B Motor Vehicle Operators License (plus endorsement for passengers and air brakes), a valid California School Bus Drivers Certificate, and a valid Medical Examiners Certificate (DMV No. DL51A).ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THIS POSITION1. Perform a wide variety of specialized driving tasks; interpret and apply rules and regulations as appropriate.2. Drives a school bus or other transportation vehicle on an assigned route and time schedule and/or on special trips in conformity with District policies and rules and regulations stipulated by the California Highway Patrol and State Department of Education.3. Transports students, staff and chaperones on field trips, athletic activities and other special trips.4. Boards and discharges student passengers; escorting children across streets and stopping traffic as necessary.BUS DRIVERBurton Elementary School District5. Maintains good order among students on the buses following district policies regarding the disciplining of children and contact with parents and other citizens; conducts bus evacuation drills.6. Inspect (daily) the bus or other transportation vehicle, if needed, for mechanical conditions affecting safety of operations and reports defects or malfunctions.7. Sweep, clean and refuel buses and other automotive transportation equipment, maintaining them in a clean and orderly condition.8. Complete the daily record of transportation functions, including students transported, mileage, type of trip, standby time and completes other reports when required.9. May transport other materials in district vehicles.10. During times when buses are not in use, positions in this class may be assigned to general maintenance and clean-up activities in the transportation department.11.
