Aug 06, 2024Genomics - CytogeneticsFull Time80269BRJob SummaryThe Clinical Lab Scientist:Perform test procedures in microarray, wet lab tasks including culturing, FISH (Fluorescent In Situ Hybridization) in Cytogenetics and other tests using molecular techniques (for example, SNP microarray). Transcribe and report test results. Operate laboratory instrumentation & equipment to accurately generate test results. Initiate troubleshooting of errant laboratory instrumentation & equipment as needed. Follow established quality control procedures and participate in all associated tasks in the section. Must be able to work in a high-volume setting.The Clinical Lab Scientist Specialist:Provides services of both a technical and non-technical nature in the laboratory service areas. Performs routine and complex laboratory tests in the cytogenetics department of the clinical laboratory to provide physicians with rapid and accurate laboratory test results. Tests include conventional cytogenetics and advanced technology testing, for example, microarray testing. Some of the duties include: analysis of microarray data, processing of specimens in the laboratory; performance of waived, moderate, and highly complex analytical processes; ability to recognize human chromosome banding patterns; manual dexterity to use common laboratory equipment and perform sterile techniques as required; establishing, performing and documenting quality assurance, quality control and equipment maintenance; recognizing problems and identifying causes; developing alternatives and determining solutions; confirming and verifying results through an in-depth knowledge of techniques, principles, and instruments; correlating and interpreting data based on knowledge of factors affecting test results; initial, harvest, stain, microscopically analyze, photograph, print, karyotype and summarize analyses on cytogenetics specimens; data handling and input; answering the telephone; other duties as assigned.The employee is expected to work efficiently and should be able to determine the most effective use of time, such as overlapping procedures, organizing an individual work schedule, and setting priorities in order to meet required turnaround times (TAT) for case completion. He/she should also determine, according to established guidelines, proper methods necessary for specimen processing and analysis.Regular communication regarding sample analysis and problems to the section supervisor or co-workers and proper handing-off is expected to achieve accurate test results.Salary InformationThe final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.
