Faculty - Principal Investigators

We invite applications from qualified faculty candidates at all ranks to join the National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories (NEIDL) at Boston University (BU), one of only two national, maximum containment facilities at universities supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Successful candidates will hold a faculty position in one or more academic departments across BU, usually within the Chobanian and Avedisian School of Medicine, the College of Arts and Sciences, or the College of Engineering.The NEIDL is committed to global impact, transforming high-consequence infectious disease research to create life-saving technologies and innovations. With established programs in immunology, virology, pathogenesis, and international collaboration, NEIDL faculty conduct research to define, prevent, and treat diseases caused by pathogens with pandemic potential.Situated within the bustling academic, medical, and biopharma ecosystem of Boston, the NEIDL contributes to a dynamic infectious diseases hub at BU, alongside numerous global infectious disease departments on the Medical Campus.Equipped with state-of-the-art laboratory facilities encompassing all biosafety levels (BSL) up to and including BSL-4, extensive animal housing facilities, aerobiology lab, and high containment insectaries, the NEIDL provides an unparalleled research environment. Faculty members have access to technology platforms within the NEIDL, including advanced microscopy and imaging, flow cytometry, biocontainment in vivo imaging, Cytiva surface plasmon resonance and Octet, high throughput cell imaging and tissue staining, spatial transcriptomics, and fluid micro robotics.An extensive array of university centers across the BU Campus provides investigators access to state-of-the art multi-omics, stem cell/organoid technologies at the Center for Regenerative Medicine, Photonics, Center for Emerging Infectious Disease Policy, Computing and Data Sciences, CARB-X, the global antibacterial innovation accelerator, Photonics, and a Cryo EM facility.Ideal candidates will lead an independent, externally funded, basic and/or translational research program in replication, transmission and pathogenesis of emerging and (re)-emerging viruses at BSL3 and BSL4. Examples include arboviruses, respiratory viruses, poxviruses, bunyaviruses (including arenaviruses), henipaviruses, flaviviruses and other RNA viruses, as well as other microbes including but not limited to mycobacterium tuberculosis. Areas of interest include structure-based vaccine design, B-cell development, immunologic mechanisms of protection, mucosal immunology, post-acute neurological sequelae of microbial infection, insect transmission, and climate change impact on infectious diseases.
