Drives and operates trucks and equipment; loads, hauls and distributes materials for use in construction and maintenance activities.***These are fluid positions. There is a career path for Road Technicians that has an established criterion that outlines advancement opportunities. Upon gaining experience and furthering education and/or gaining certifications, advancement is readily available. Road Technicians may have the opportunity to attend CDL school to become a General Equipment Operator. The cost of school is covered and the individual will be paid while attending CDL School.***EXAMPLES OF WORK

Constructs and maintains drainage systems, sidewalks, road restoration, bridges, ditches and sea walls.Uses electrical, gas-powered and hand tools, including but not limited to chainsaws, rakes, shovels and hammers to perform daily tasks.Uses chemicals and cleaners.Performs traffic control duties through the use of signals (i.e., flagging, stop signs, and yield signs).Cleans equipment and tools; maintains cleanliness and order in storage areas.Reports equipment malfunctions and maintenance needs to supervisor.Removes nuisance items from county property (i.e., litter, beaver dams).Operates front-end loaders, tractors and riding mowers as needed.Performs grounds maintenance tasks (i.e., mowing, trimming, edging, watering, fertilizing).Performs other duties as assigned.General Equipment Operator Responsibilities:

Operates trucks and equipment, to include steel wheel, dump trucks, flat-beds, loaders, backhoes, spreaders, bush hogs, compactors, graders, dozers, rollers, four-wheel drive pickups, and tanker trucks.Operates hand tools, to include chainsaw, shovel, axe and rake.Performs physical labor in the maintenance, restoration or construction of roadways, drainage systems or disposal sites.Loads trucks with clay, sand, rock and soil.Inspects trucks, tools and equipment; ensures trucks, tools and equipment are properly maintained.Assists with traffic control at work sites, to include flagging and erecting barricades and signs.Cuts trees, limbs and shrubbery on rights-of-way or adjacent road and traffic areas of assigned work site.Clears ditches, culverts, drains, gutters and dams.Installs and cleans waste and landfill drains.Performs other duties as assigned.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Training, and Experience:

High school diploma or GED, or road maintenance or outside labor experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.Licenses and/or Certifications:

Requires a valid driver license.General Equipment Operator Minimum Qualifications:

Education, Training, and Experience:

High school diploma or GED supplemented by one (1) year of experience in the operation of heavy-duty trucks and equipment, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.Licenses and/or Certifications:

Requires a valid Class “B”, or better, commercial driver license with air brakes. May require an “N” endorsement depending upon assignment.OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Physical Requirements:

Must be physically able to operate a variety of hand held and electrical equipment and tools, and light to medium duty construction vehicles. Must be able to exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, or 20 to 50 pounds frequently, or 10 to 20 pounds to constantly lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Must be able to perform manual tasks and remain on feet for extended periods of time.Language Ability:

Must be able to speak with clarity, and to articulate information to others.Intelligence:

Requires the ability to apply principles of common sense understanding to carry out written or oral instructions; deal with problems involving concrete variables in or from standardized situations; perform manual labor and machine operations; make independent judgments in the absence of supervisor; acquire knowledge of topics related to primary occupation.Numerical Aptitude:

Must be able to add and subtract totals. May require the ability to multiply and divide.Interpersonal Temperament:

Requires the ability to deal with people beyond receiving instructions. Must be able to perform under stress when confronted with an emergency or tight deadline.
