The successful candidate will develop and manage the laboratory safety program for the Dept. of Natural and Health Sciences. The candidate will also oversee the Chemistry teaching laboratories, including laboratory setup, student workers, and supplies and equipment, and the Chemistry research laboratories. This is a 12 month, full-time (30-40 hours a week) appointment under the direction of the Department Chair.Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Coordinate and supervise the setup of equipment and supplies for Chemistry teaching labs each dayCommunicate lab needs with Chemistry faculty (full-time and adjunct), including requesting syllabi and compiling supply orders for coursesCoordinate with Lab Coordinator the purchasing of all supplies and equipment for Chemistry teaching and research labsStore and inventory chemicals, supplies, and equipment for ChemistryMaintain SDS sheets for Dept. of Natural & Health SciencesOrganize and maintain Chemistry teaching labs, and preparatory and storage roomsMaintain the chemical hygiene plan and lab safety plan for the Dept. of Natural and Health SciencesPresent annual reports to Department Chair and Chief Academic Officer on lab safety and hazardous wasteProperly dispose of chemical and hazardous waste from teaching and research labs used by the Dept. of Natural and Health SciencesTrain all science faculty (full-time and part-time), Science Fellows and student lab workers on lab safety and equipment use, both general and chemistry-specificMaintain lab equipment each day for ChemistryCoordinate major equipment repairs for the Dept. of Natural and Health SciencesManage Science Fellows for Dept. of Natural and Health Sciences, including scheduling hours, educating and monitoring lab safety, organizing meetings, and communicating updates and needs with faculty member(s) supervising Science Fellows programSupervise Science Fellows and student lab workers in Chemistry teaching labsManage day-to-day operations in Brown Science Hall, especially in coordinating repairs and needs with Maintenance and Safety & SecuritySupervise periodic checks of safety equipment, including first aid kits, eye washes, safety showers and fire extinguishersPerform other duties as assigned by Dept. ChairMinimum Requirements

Applicants must hold a B.S. or B.A. in Chemistry or closely related disciplineSome experience with teaching laboratory setup and basic knowledge of safety in the science laboratoryApplicants must be detail-oriented, able to work independently and in team settings, exhibit excellent problem-solving skills, and communicate effectively with staff, students and facultyBasic computer skillsAbility to perform the physical requirements of the positionWillingness to support the Catholic and Franciscan values of the universityPreferred Requirements

M.S. in Chemistry or related discipline2 or more years of experience coordinating science labs in higher educationKnowledgeable about safe use and disposal of chemicalsSome familiarity with OSHA and EPA regulations regarding laboratoriesHours/Shift/Work Schedule

This is a 12 month, full-time (30-40 hours a week) appointment under the direction of the Department Chair.Physical Requirements of Position

Work is performed in both an office setting and laboratory setting. Exposure to chemicals used within undergraduate chemistry labs on a daily basis.
