Senior Business Banking Underwriter

Job Summary

The Senior Business Banking Underwriter performs credit analysis of small business loans. This position works with loan originators to assess and mitigate credit risks while ensuring loans are compliant with policy and federal regulations.

This position monitors the performance and compliance of the commercial loan portfolio and documents risk accordingly and serves as a subject matter expert and escalation point for team members by demonstrating advanced knowledge of credit risk management and loan administration. The Senior Business Banking Underwriter works with and oversees third-party vendors in the preparation of other credit underwriting activities including annual reviews and loan modifications. This position helps prepare portfolio level reports for management, regulators, and the SBA.

The Senior Business Banking Underwriter reports to the Senior Manager of Business Banking.

Essential Functions

Underwriting

  • Manage the credit underwriting platform ensuring our underwriting model is driving the appropriate results.
  • Underwrite all Small Business loan applications that require manual underwriting and spreads.
  • Assist loan processor/closer in getting Small Business loans closed and funded in accordance with credit terms.
  • Utilize underwriting spreadsheets and spreading software to accurately analyze credit worthiness.
  • Order, review, and analyze credit reports and appraisals for commercial portfolio.
  • Perform various departmental functions, including stress testing and audit preparation.


Portfolio Management

  • Ensure portfolio risks are identified, monitored, mitigated, and reported to maintain compliance with portfolio risk parameters.
  • Provide oversight and guidance on departmental guidelines, policies, and procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with lending policies, procedures, guidelines, and regulations.
  • Report on loan covenant or financial reporting compliance in conjunction with the Loan Servicer.
  • Generate monthly and/or quarterly reports to management as needed.
  • Update credit policies, procedures, and guidelines as needed.
  • Assist with the transition of problem loans to Collections department.
  • Negotiate modification terms requested by member or necessary to collect the loan.
  • Prepare risk rating reports as necessary including risk rating migration report.
  • Prepare for and participate in annual NCUA exams and third-party audits.
  • Assist Collections department with SBA past dues, compliance, and pursuit obtaining SBA guarantees.
  • Prepare monthly reports to provide to management regarding the SBA portfolio size and performance as needed.
  • Assist Finance department with SBA 1502 reporting requirements.
  • Coordinate the required activity after a sale of loans as directed by Finance team.


Vendor Management

  • Manage outsourced underwriting activities with CUSO's to ensure work complies with regulatory requirements and credit union guidelines and policies.
  • Review all Annual Reviews and make recommendations for risk rating upgrades and downgrades based on third party CUSO recommendations.
  • Ensure credit approval memos are compliant with all underwriting guidelines, internal policy, and regulations, noting exceptions accordingly.


Other

  • Adhere to all company policies, procedures and business ethics codes.
  • Complete required regulatory training as assigned.
  • Maintain strict adherence and compliance with all laws, rules, regulations and internal controls specific to your role, including but not limited to Bank Secrecy Act, Anti-Money Laundering, USA Patriot Act, OFAC and Fair Lending regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Knowledge

  • Thorough understanding of UFCU credit policy and commercial lending transactions.
  • Advanced knowledge of commercial lending underwriting principles and process.
  • Thorough understanding of how to evaluate personal and business tax, financial documents, and related business lending documents.


Skills

  • Advanced analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Strong PC skills, including MS Word and MS Excel.
  • Strong written, verbal, interpersonal, active listening, collaborative, and presentation communication skills, with strong ability to work with a variety of stakeholders and explain complex information succinctly, including with members and third-party vendors.

Experience

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a business-related field. Four (4) years of relevant experience may be substituted for degree.
  • Minimum five (5) years of general Commercial Lending experience.
  • Minimum three (3) years of Commercial Lending underwriting experience.
  • Must be bondable


Preferred Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance or Accounting


  • Professional credit training
  • Credit union or other financial institution experience
  • Experience working with third-party regulators or audit firms
  • Basic understanding of SBA 7a lending programs
