JOB SUMMARY

Loan Review plays a critical function within financial institutions, providing transparency to both Senior Management and the Board on how credit risk is being managed. An effective Loan Review process provides an independent, objective validation of the level of credit risk being accepted by the bank and serves as an "early warning" indicator as risk increases. Loan control function is spread over three functional areas within the institution: Credit Administration, Audit, and Loan Review. Loan Review is the mainstay of internal control of the loan portfolio. Periodic objective reviews of credit risk levels and risk management processes are essential to effective portfolio management. The Loan Review function must be completely independent of loan origination in the bank and be effectively and independently administered. Findings of the Loan Review process to have direct, unimpeded path to the Board of Directors or a committee thereof. In the end, the Loan Review function must remain separate in much the same way as the Internal Audit function.

The position of Loan Review Analyst reports to the Loan Review Manager. The analyst must maintain independence while gathering and analyzing credit information on existing borrowers; performing reviews of bank's loans to in order to assess the level of risk in the credits; identifying weaknesses in credit relationships; suggesting workout alternatives for problem credits; assessing compliance with all Bank policies and procedures, as well as, all applicable state and federal banking regulations; and completing special projects at the request of the Loan Review Manager or the Audit Committee.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

The duties listed below may not include all responsibilities that the person in this role may be asked to perform. Incumbent may be required to perform other related duties as assigned.

1. Reviews mid-size to large loans of moderate to high complexity.

a. Ensures the accuracy of risk grades assigned by lender;

b. Reviews quality of credit underwriting;

c. Analyzes financial condition of the borrower;

d. Reviews payment history of credit;

e. Identifies deviations from loan policy guidelines;

f. Confirms proper documentation obtained;

g. Ensures compliance with relevant banking laws and regulations;

h. Confirms borrowers' compliance with loan covenants;

i. Requests additional information as needed; and

j. Discusses findings with lending officer and senior lending management, as needed.

2. Complete review audits on various areas of lending including specific loan types, OREO, special assets, allowance for loan and lease losses (ALLL) and other lending areas.

3. Completes and reports quarterly to senior , management and other personnel on various areas, including grade changes, underwriting trends and other credit risk trends.

4. Develops and maintains information on financial industry, the economy, market conditions, rates, competition, and law, regulations and regulatory requirements.

5. Assist other individuals in the loan review department with processes, projects, or other tasks.

6. Assists Loan Review Manager in writing and completing quarterly Loan Review reports to Audit Committee.

7. Assists Loan Review Manager in projects as assigned, including supplying requested information to regulatory and other outside firms as needed.

8. Assists in providing loan account ratings for loan officers.

9. Provides leadership in absence of loan review manager.

  • Bachelor's degree (BA) or equivalent from a four-year college or university; Finance or Accounting preferred.
  • Requires 10 years minimum in credit or loan review.
  • Perform duties independently, without influence from lending personnel or administration.
  • Maintain complete confidentiality.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills; able to manage priorities and workflow.
  • Excellent verbal and communication skills.
  • Professional appearance and demeanor.
  • Must be able to speak, read, write and understand the primary language(s) used in the workplace.
  • Bilingual skills a plus.
  • Acute attention to detail.
  • Versatility, flexibility, and willingness to work within constantly changing priorities.
