The Pasadena Fire Department is excited to announce an immediate opening for a Fire Plans Examiner. The Fire Plans Examiner reviews construction drawings of building, mechanical, plumbing, and electrical plans for residential and non-residential buildings both on and off the public counter and prepares comprehensive written plan review comments.

Checks plans and specifications and fire/life safety and fire protection system calculations for residential, commercial, industrial, and public buildings and structures for compliance with California Building and Fire Codes and adopted International Building and Fire Codes, adopted national standards, local ordinances and other related county, state and federal laws.Evaluates code compliance for required fire flow and hydrant location and spacing, given a plan and fire flow test results, so that hydrants are correctly located, required fire flow is determined, and deficiencies are identified, documented, and reported.Verifies required occupancy classifications, occupancy loads, means of egress, interior finishes, building height and area, building services and systems, fire and smoke protection features, fire protection and life safety system, means of egress, fire flow, emergency responder access, emergency planning, and other life safety requirements.Assists in projects needed for improving processes, public information to assist in the development process, and the Fire Engineering Division's involvement in the development of initial pre-incident plans in accordance with NFPA Standards and industry best practices, for community and firefighter safety.Ensures that plans meet the requirements of related fire and building codes, regulations, and restrictions.Makes corrections of deficiencies where required. Facilitates the resolution of deficiencies identified during the plan review.Plan checks preliminary plans and site plans for fire and building code requirements, such as emergency vehicle fire access lanes, water supply lines, and fire protection systems.Performs inspections of job sites to evaluate discrepancies between plans, specifications, and work completed; consults with engineers, architects, contractors, or the public to discuss problems with initial plans and required changes; performs field inspections in assistance to other work unit inspectors, or upon request by Fire Department management staff.Responds to verbal or written inquiries and complaints; provides technical assistance to engineers, architects, contractors, other City personnel, and the public; interprets and explains requirements and restrictions relative to building codes, ordinances, regulations, policies and procedures.Assists in researching and developing code changes or procedural changes to enhance customer services.Competencies

Bachelor's degree

in fire administration, fire science, engineering, architecture or closely related field, and

one year of experience

in fire protection system design, life safety system plan checking, fire protection system plan checking OR

two years

of fire code enforcement experience.Desirable Qualifications

Two or more years of experience in fire plan checking, structural design, or architecture.ICC certification as a Fire Plans Examiner.California Engineer or Architect license.Selection Process

The selection process will consist of any combination of training and experience evaluation, written exam, interview panel, and department interviews.Vacancy Information
