Information reported by the background check will not automatically disqualify you from employment.Position Summary/Purpose of Position:The University of Maryland seeks an experienced, creative, and forward-thinking leader to serve as Chief Development Officer (CDO). This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in a dynamic advancement team currently in the silent phase of a 10-figure campaign.Reporting to the Executive Director of Development in University Relations with a dotted line to the Dean, the CDO is the chief fundraiser for their assigned unit. Carrying a portfolio of approximately 80 prospects and current donors, they are responsible for securing major and principal gifts to advance the Dean’s priorities for the College. The CDO develops and implements prospect strategies from identification through cultivation, solicitation, documented commitments, and stewardship.The Chief Development Officer will have a proven track record as a successful hands-on fundraiser who is skilled at closing six and seven-figure gifts from individuals and occasionally corporations and foundations. They will carry an active portfolio of prospects with prospect visit goals of 8-12 per month and 12-15 major gift solicitations over the course of a year.The Chief Development Officer will work closely with colleagues in Gift Planning, Corporate and Foundation Relations, Annual Giving, Leadership Annual Giving, Regional Giving, Donor Relations and Stewardship, and the Alumni Association to build strategies for donor engagement and secure gifts on behalf of the College.This position will require the availability and willingness to work evenings, weekends, and outside standard business hours as needed. Local and some national travel is required.Minimum Qualifications:A minimum of eight (8) years of fundraising or related experience is required, including at least two (2) years of supervisory experience or managerial responsibilities.A proven record of working effectively with volunteers and high-level donors, building donor relationships, and soliciting and closing five+ figure gifts.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Must be an entrepreneurial and strategic fundraiser.Self-motivated professional with the ability to assertively create and cultivate relationships.Demonstrated ability to solicit and close major and principal gifts.Ability to identify and build constituencies for support, in setting and achieving individual and group goals, and in planning and executing campaigns.Knowledge of corporate and foundation fundraising.Knowledgeable about best practices in the advancement field.Exceptional verbal, editing management and organization skills.The ability to relate with department chairs, center directors, and research faculty to articulate priorities, accomplishments, and aspirations to these diverse external audiences.Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively and cooperatively in a large university with an integrated development program.Preferences:Familiarity with higher education/educational organizations.Experience with other aspects of fundraising including planned giving.Candidates must be able to provide proof of eligibility to work in the USA.
