Kitchen Table Advisors, in partnership with UCCE Marin County, has been awarded a FARE Grant through the County of Marin for the purposes of exploring row crop feasibility on existing ag land and an adjacent survey of identifying a pipeline of emerging BIPOC farm business owners, called: Finding Farmland, Finding Farmers. This project will entail a comprehensive feasibility study about the potential to encourage agricultural landowners in Marin County to lease farmland to BIPOC specialty crop farmers, with the long-term goals to ensure agricultural lands remain in production, and to increase the proportion of Marin County farmland that is stewarded by farmers of color who use organic, climate-friendly, and/or regenerative methods.

Responsibilities:

The Contractor will evaluate two agricultural properties in Marin County for suitability as potential sites for leasing to a specialty crop producer.

These evaluations will assess both natural and man-made features of the sites, inventorying the assets and necessary improvements relevant to small-to-medium scale specialty crop production.

The evaluations will require multiple visits to both sites as well as interactions with the landowners and detailed inquiries into features such as soil quality, water quality, etc.

Learnings from the site evaluations will be summarized in reports that paint a picture of the most sustainable model(s) for successful lease/tenancy and facilitate decision-making by both the landowner and prospective tenants.

The final reports should allow landowners to understand benefits of leasing their land to a specialty crop producer (e.g. likely/appropriate lease rate) as well as the logistical and financial implications of leasing (e.g. necessary improvements to infrastructure, likely impacts on the land, etc.).

The final reports should allow prospective tenants to determine fit with their own business and production aspirations and provide a common foundation of understanding for their lease conversations with the landowner.

The Contractor’s work will include the development of a template for evaluation of other agricultural properties.

The Contractor should document the different lines of inquiry engaged during the property evaluation phase of their work, the costs associated with related testing, and other details of the project that would be useful for someone else who attempts to repeat the process on a different property.

This information should then be distilled by the Contractor into a short step-by-step document (“template”) which can be shared, along with the reports from this project, with agricultural landowners, TA providers and additional stakeholders who are interested in identifying and elevating potential production sites for use by tenant specialty crop producers.
