Research Chemist (Temporary) About the Opportunity Job Summary: We are seeking a research chemist to support research focused on the design, synthesis, and characterization of novel 2-dimensional polymers in Northeastern University's Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Complex, Boston Campus. The duties and responsibilities for this position may include, but are not limited to: Design, synthesize, and purify hexafunctional benzene monomers Design, polymerize, and characterize novel two-dimensional polymers, e.g., graphimine, graphamid, and related structures, for high performance applications Develop strong working relationships with U.S. Army Research Laboratory scientist collaborators Provide meticulous documentation, analyses, and summaries of results Foster a safe, collaborative environment Develop and write reports, publications, and grants Attend and participate in research meetings/seminars Participate in career development training workshops/sessions and networking opportunities for research and mentoring Guide and mentor graduate or undergraduate students, including participation in training to improve these skills as needed Learn and apply novel periodic extensional flow polymerization processing Learn and apply advanced 2-D polymer characterization techniques The research chemist will have the opportunity to meet government decision-makers and learn directly from them about the role of scientific research in addressing complex, real-world needs. Furthermore, the research chemist will have the opportunity to learn how research products transition from the proof-of-concept stage to integrated production systems. It is expected that the research chemist will develop and execute a career development plan in coordination with the PI. Minimum Qualifications: Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Must have a Ph.D. in chemistry or equivalent expertise with demonstrated accomplishments in organic synthesis, separations, and structural characterization using modern techniques, e.g. Schlenk line, chromatography, NMR, FTIR, XRD techniques; Must be a highly motivated, innovative chemist, with demonstrated excellence in research and experience in polymer chemistry and material science. Must be team-oriented, with a proven track record of natural leadership. This position requires excellent communication skills, both interpersonal and scientific, oral, and written. Must be able to undertake full-time research. All candidates should describe how they support a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment inside and outside the laboratory.
