The Soft Robots Lab in the Mathematics and Computer Science Department at Wesleyan University seeks a Research Scientist.The Research Scientist will work with Dr. Sonia Roberts (at Wesleyan University) and Dr. Tonia Hsieh (at Temple University, remotely) on an NSF-funded project using a jumping robot to determine how morphological variations in feet can lead to different types of force production in complex, flowing ground. Specifically, we will investigate the evolutionary drivers that may have led to diversification and conservation of toe morphologies in sand specialist lizards.Responsibilities include:Updating an existing robot to use open-source design filesWriting documentation for the robot, including build instructions, that is oriented towards non-engineering (e.g., Biology) undergraduate studentsSupervising undergraduate studentsManuscript preparation and editingConference presentationsAssisting with undergraduate Robotics courseOther duties as assignedThis is an on-campus position.There may be an opportunity for a candidate who is interested in gaining teaching experience to teach 1 or 2 courses, but teaching is not a required part of this position.This position is particularly well suited for a biologist/paleontologist who wants to use biologically inspired robots in their future research, and will include structured training in robotics for such a candidate. It is also well suited for an engineer/physicist/computer scientist who is interested in exploring faculty positions at liberal arts universities/colleges like Wesleyan where they would work primarily with undergraduates.This position has been approved for one year position with the potential to extend for a second year.Additional Application Instructions:Position is open until filled.
