Metadata Librarian for Distinctive Collections

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Libraries seeks a creative and collaborative librarian for its Metadata Librarian for Distinctive Collections position. This role is crucial for making discoverable and accessible the unique and rare holdings in MIT’s distinctive collections.Reporting to the Lead Metadata Strategist, this librarian will lead, manage, and participate in the metadata workflows for distinctive collections in tangible and digital formats. Responsibilities include creating and editing metadata for rare books, MIT publications, images, audio, video, web resources, and other materials in MARC and non-MARC formats. The librarian will embrace values of equity, diversity, inclusion, and social justice in their work with people, collections, and systems, applying these principles to metadata and discovery environments. They will supervise two staff members and coordinate the work of others involved in metadata production and management for distinctive collections, providing coaching, leadership, and development support. Collaboration with colleagues on projects related to collection management, digital collections, archival metadata, and the remediation and transformation of metadata is expected.This position supports the Libraries’ vision of creating, discovering, using, disseminating, and preserving knowledge that is fully open and equitably accessible, valuing innovation and exploring new technologies for metadata creation and management.RESPONSIBILITIES

Metadata Creation and Management (45%)Lead, manage, and participate in metadata workflows for distinctive collections.Create original metadata records and perform complex editing of metadata records according to established standards and best practices.Apply equity, diversity, inclusion, and social justice values to metadata and discovery.Contribute to projects related to collection management, digital collections, and archival metadata.Utilize technologies such as scripting languages and batch editing applications to create or curate metadata.Coordinate workflows and communication between metadata, acquisitions, and archival processing staff.Create, review, and revise documentation for workflows and best practices.Stay current on trends and best practices in metadata creation and management.Staff Management, Development, and Support (35%)Hire, supervise, train, and assess two service staff.Provide coaching, leadership, and development support for staff.Plan and run regular meetings for functions-based working groups.Lead staff in establishing work goals and coordinating activities and projects.Collaboration, Partnerships, and Outreach (20%)Develop collaborative working relationships with staff throughout the Libraries.Serve as a member of the Technical Services Leadership Team.Advise and educate Collections leadership and Libraries’ staff in policies and procedures.May provide public services assistance in the Department of Distinctive Collections.REQUIREMENTS

Master’s degree in library/information science or relevant field.At least three years of relevant experience.Experience leading, managing, training, and inspiring staff.In-depth understanding of cataloging and authority standards (RDA, DCRM, LCSH, etc.).Knowledge of best practices for the description and management of rare books and special collections.Experience creating and managing metadata for digital resources.Positive service attitude with ability to work well with diverse groups.Excellent written and oral communication skills.Ability to adapt to change and work independently and collaboratively.Ability to identify problems and think creatively.Understanding of new and emerging technologies.Dedication to innovation and experimentation.Experience with library automation systems and tools.Experience with project planning and management.Awareness of professional trends in metadata management.PreferredBasic understanding of acquisitions practices for distinctive collections.Awareness of emerging metadata technologies.Experience using Ex Libris’ Alma library services platform.Interest in the history of science, technology, or architecture.Reading knowledge of one or more languages other than English.SALARY AND BENEFITS

This job is a pay grade 8 with a salary range of $71,175 to $119,200, depending on qualifications and experience. MIT offers excellent benefits, including health and retirement plans, dental plan, tuition assistance, and fully subsidized MBTA passes.
