Defending and advancing these fundamental rights and core values relies on the contributions of exceptional staff.We are pleased to invite applications for a term limited Indigenous Justice (IJ) Project Manager Fellow to help lead efforts to promote Indigenous Justice work across nationwide ACLU state affiliates and national ACLU programs and departments. The IJ Project Manager works with the ACLU’s Indigenous Justice Working Group (IJWG), its steering committee (IJSC), and the Indigenous Justice Action Committee (IJAC) to build capacity of staff across the ACLU to engage in Indigenous Justice work effectively and respectfully. The position will provide project management support to ensure that the IJWG, IJSC, and IJAC stay on track to accomplish priorities, maintain awareness of and facilitate effective communication about IJ work across the ACLU, and help build bridges between ACLU staff members working on Indigenous Justice issues. Approximately 75% of the work will be focused on national work, and 25% of the work on the Washington affiliate.Indigenous Justice (IJ) work at the ACLU seeks to support and advance the sovereignty of Indigenous people and Nations through culturally authentic and Indigenous-centered legal, policy, advocacy, and organizing work designed to dismantle colonial systems of oppression. Through this work, we aim to support Indigenous communities and follow their lead as they work to uphold their sovereignty, dignity, and autonomy. We strive to honor and, when possible, integrate Indigenous worldviews and values into our approaches and strategies.The position reports to the ACLU-WA Integrated Advocacy Director. This is a 2 year, limited-term position with the opportunity for renewal.DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Race EquityActively participate in the ACLU-WA’s race equity work. This may include utilizing ACLU-WA race equity tools and adopting ACLU-WA race equity practices.Ensure that the ACLU-WA’s Indigenous Justice work centers race equity and Indigenous justice as an overarching value in advocacy work. Develop and implement a plan in a manner that increases the power and voice of impacted communities to effectuate sustained change and centers the ACLU-WA’s community agreements in internal operations.IJ efforts across the National ACLUCoordinate and facilitate the work of the IJ Working Group (made up of staff from dozens of affiliates and national programs, led by a steering committee of 5 staff) and IJ Action Committee (made up of Executive Directors and other senior leaders from across the ACLU). Ensure that the IJWG and IJAC are making progress towards identified priorities; facilitate team members to identify roadblocks, pivots, and needed supports.Maintain awareness of and effectively communicate IJ advocacy across the ACLU. Work to publicize and promote ACLU IJ initiatives and resources to support effective IJ work on internal ACLU communication platforms. This could include working with the IJWG and IJAC to create and manage resource guides, toolkits, and information hubs.With the IJWG Steering Committee, facilitate connections between ACLU staff working on similar IJ issues. Identify and generate opportunities for cross-affiliate training and consultation opportunities to ensure expertise and learning are shared among affiliates.Working with other members of the IJWG, IJAC, or with ACLU-WA staff as assigned, support ACLU affiliates in states/regions engaged in Indigenous Justice issues or with significant Indigenous populations and relevant national projects to begin or deepen their Indigenous Justice work. This includes identifying needed technical assistance, facilitating connection to experts inside the ACLU-WA, and, as appropriate, helping to identify and build connections with tribes and Indigenous organizations.Establish and cultivate relationships with the ACLU National’s office of Affiliate Support and Nationwide Initiatives (ASNI) and other departments to promote Indigenous Justice work in the broader organization.Organize regular opportunities to engage ACLU staff, leadership, board members, donors, volunteers, and members in learning about Indigenous Justice, the unique history and current context of Tribes and Indigenous communities (“IJ 101” trainings) and respectful ways of engaging and working with Indigenous people.Support National EDIB staff to incorporate Indigenous perspectives into curricula and trainings.Support the IJAC in its work to develop and build affiliate and national HR staff engagement with strategies for recruiting and retaining Indigenous staff in affiliates and the ACLU’s National office.Support the ACLU-WA’s Indigenous Justice advocacy in WashingtonWith the Integrated Advocacy Director and other staff, build relationships with Indigenous leaders, Indigenous-led community-based organizations, advocacy groups that focus on Indigenous Justice issues, and tribal government leaders across Washington to learn more about opportunities for the ACLU-WA to partner on efforts to advance Indigenous Justice.Collaborate with other ACLU-WA staff members to incorporate Indigenous Justice principles and strengthen connections to Indigenous Justice leaders in ACLU-WA campaigns, amicus briefs, or affirmative litigation cases in one of our four major issue areas.With the Integrated Advocacy Department leadership team, support efforts to enhance understanding of Indigenous Justice principles amongst ACLU-WA staff and build community accountability structures to inform the ACLU-WA’s Indigenous Justice work.EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate will bring many of the following qualifications and attributes:At least 3 years of advocacy or administrative experience required.History of living in or working with Indigenous communities and familiarity with traditional and cultural protocols. Knowledge of current Indigenous movements, campaigns, and issues impacting Indigenous communities.The ability and willingness to develop a general understanding of civil rights and civil liberties advocacy in courts, and with the legislature and other government bodies.Excellent work-planning and project management skills. The ability to develop concrete short and intermediate term workplans to advance longer term goals, the ability to track multiple projects simultaneously, and coordinate teams to drive strategies to completion. Attention to detail; the ability to prioritize, set, and meet deadlines.Excellent communication and facilitation skills and the ability to communicate to diverse audiences on complex topics. Strong listening skills and the ability to facilitate groups towards decision making and action steps.Demonstrated understanding of the ACLU and its structure; the ability to coordinate and grow work across multiple affiliated but independent organizations.Awareness of, and willingness to engage in, the difficult, transformative work of challenging structural racism, implicit bias, and other inequities.Demonstrated history of building strong relationships with internal and external partners. Able to build relationships across differences and navigate conflict in a manner that values relationships with people at all levels. Team player who inspires collaboration, lifts up the work of others, and maintains balance and perspective with patience and a sense of humor. The ACLU-WA observes a hybrid workstyle, with some staff working primarily remotely while others work in the office several days a week. Our office is generally open between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. and is located in downtown Seattle. The ACLU-WA seeks to provide equitable and competitive compensation for attracting and retaining staff with the skill, judgment, and perseverance to confront challenges to civil rights and civil liberties and build a state where all people live with dignity and equity, enjoying freedoms unimpeded by racial and economic injustice and other forms of oppression. We provide a mix of compensation for staff that is intended to address today’s needs and allow planning for tomorrow and into retirement. As such, the ACLU-WA has adopted a salary scale for measuring how to best compensate its employees. The salary for this position is $91,263-109,309. A range indicates the intention to accommodate those with varying years of relevant experience, as determined by the salary scale.BENEFITS

: Generous benefits include three weeks of vacation, thirteen sick days with an additional ten days given in 2024, fifteen holidays, employer-paid professional development, fully paid employee medical, dental, vision, and disability insurance, an employer contributed retirement plan, student loan reimbursement, family care and adoption assistance, life insurance, and an ORCA card, the regional transportation pass.
