The Flow Cytometry Core Facility in the Institute for the Biology of Stem Cells (IBSC) at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a Flow Cytometry Core Specialist. The Flow Cytometry Core Facility provides investigators, both inside and outside UCSC, state-of-the-art technologies for cell sorting and analysis. We are looking for a team player with an understanding of flow cytometry and the ability to support the maintenance and quality control of flow cytometers and cell sorters, operating/troubleshooting of the flow cytometers, and providing oversight for core clients carrying out flow cytometry experiments. Under the supervision of Assistant Professor Shaheen Sikandar, the incumbent will be assigned the following duties.Flow Cytometry ExpertisePractical and theoretical knowledge of flow cytometers and cell sorters; ability to work independently.Ability to operate analytical flow cytometers in the flow core; experience with Cytoflex and/or similar machines.Independent operation of cell sorters; experience on the BD Aria or Symphony preferred.Customer ServiceAssist core clientele in the acquisition and sorting of flow cytometry samples.Assist clients with the design of flow cytometry experiments, including appropriate choice of instrumentation as well as fluorochromes.Ability to assist clients with data analysis such as FlowJo is desirable but not required.Perform daily and monthly QC on core instrumentation; interpret and report deviations of QC.Training and EducationTrain students, postdoctoral fellows, and staff on the flow cytometry machines.Plan and develop new technologies and applications for flow cytometry.Stay current with new technologies and developments in the flow community through research, attendance of conferences, and workshops.Effectively train and communicate with clients on the use of flow cytometry analyzers and data analysis interpretation.General Lab SkillsPerform calculations for preparation of lab solutions and reagents.Comprehensive understanding of scientific principles.General computer skills and ability to quickly learn computer programs and scientific applications.Strong analytical skills and excellent judgment.The hiring unit will not sponsor employment-eligible immigration statuses for this position.Qualifications

Basic qualifications

(required at time of application) Degree in cell biology, developmental biology, cancer biology, stem cell biology, or a related field.For appointment to the associate specialist rank:- MA/MS degree or a BA/BS degree and a minimum of six years’ post-baccalaureate experience related to the position.- At least two years of experience in a lab technician role with experience in using flow cytometry is required.For appointment to the specialist rank:MA/MS degree or a BA/BS degree and a minimum of ten years’ post-baccalaureate experience related to the position.At least five years of experience in a lab technician role with experience in using flow cytometry is required. A doctoral degree may substitute for 4-5 years of work experience.Application Requirements
