Puget Sound Educational Service District seeks a Student Assistance Professional to provide prevention and early intervention services to students at Chief Sealth International High School/Denny International Middle School within Seattle Public Schools. The Learning Support Services department places Student Assistance Professionals in schools to implement comprehensive student assistance programs that address problems associated with substance use, violence, and mental health issues.

www.psesd.org/about-psesd.Purpose StatementThe job of Specialist, Prevention/Intervention is done for the purpose of implementing and providing prevention and intervention services to students in collaboration with assigned school districts' student assistance programs under the general direction of the Prevention Programs Supervisor and/or Director.This job reports to Assigned Administrator.Essential FunctionsAssists in developing drug and alcohol related policies at schools for the purpose of assuring best practice standards.Attends training meetings at PSESD for the purpose of providing staff development and assessing program effectiveness.Conducts early intervention/insight programs for students experimenting with alcohol/drug use or suspended for alcohol/drug use for the purpose of reducing and/or mitigating substance abuse, and improving health and learning preparedness.Coordinates activities with student assistance team for the purpose of identifying high risk students and referring them to school and community-based services.Develops and implements work plans to prioritize school service needs at each site for the purpose of assuring effective strategies and maintaining program standards.Develops and implements an identification and referral process for school staff, students, and parents for the purpose of providing substance abuse reduction strategies and improving health and learning preparedness.Develops and implements prevention plans for the purpose of ensuring students are safe, healthy, supported, engaged, challenged, and actively participating in their school experiences.Embodies the principles and practices that form our culture and commitment to becoming an Antiracist Multicultural Organization for the purpose of meeting the Agency’s End: Success for Each Child and Eliminating the Opportunity Gap by Leading with Racial Equity.Facilitates school-based recovery support groups for the purpose of decreasing substance abuse and improving health and learning preparedness.Maintains confidential program records and files; compiles and inputs data for the purpose of complying with funding requirements and maintaining best practices.Participates in meetings, workshops, and seminars for the purpose of conveying/gathering information required to perform job functions.Participates in program evaluation for the purpose of evaluating program effectiveness.Presents program components to students and teachers for the purpose of sharing resources that support substance abuse reduction and improve health and learning preparedness.Provides standardized screening and referral information to students and parents participating in the prevention/intervention program for the purpose of assisting students with effective intervention support.Provides individual & family counseling services within the student assistance framework for the purpose of delivering services in conformance to established guidelines.Provides school wide awareness (prevention) programs for staff, students, and parents for the purpose of reducing and/or mitigating substance abuse and improving health and learning preparedness.Provides staff development training on various topics (e.g. tobacco, alcohol and drug prevention, intervention, mental health, physical health, engagement strategies, etc.) for the purpose of sharing expertise and resources on prevention/intervention strategies and building team capacity.Other FunctionsAssists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and effective work environment.JOB-SPECIFIC COMPETENCIESCHILD GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT : Demonstrates knowledge and expertise related to child/youth development and growth.COMMUNITY AND FAMILY ENGAGEMENT : Demonstrates knowledge and expertise related to engaging with stakeholders, including children, families and communities, to promote wellness and self-sufficiency.KNOWLEDGE SHARING : Imparts relevant information to others to increase understanding and overall Agency effectiveness and alignment.PLANNING, ORGANIZATION, AND PRIORITIZATION : Assesses the work to be performed, and considers how it should be organized and accomplished, with appropriate priorities and realistic time parameters.RECORDKEEPING AND DOCUMENTATION : Gathers, organizes, and maintains records, following confidential information and security protocols as needed. Candidates with a High School Diploma/GED must agree to obtain a CPP within 18 months of start date with agency support - agency will cover cost of examination.Experience working in a youth serving program or agency with an emphasis on prevention and early intervention of violence, alcohol, tobacco and/or other drug use, mental health, or other social or public health issues.Experience with school-based student assistance programs or youth-based educational support groups.Experience working with community-based coalitions.Presentation experience.
