May 10, 2024The Habitat Restoration Biologist is responsible for restoration project development, planning, implementation, and monitoring. This position is an exciting opportunity to implement impactful habitat restoration projects to improve salmonid habitat in the Hoh Watershed. The Hoh Tribe has secured three years of funding for this position. The successful applicant will work with the Natural Resources Department and partners to secure additional funding for project activities and to cover core operational costs to sustain the program in future years.Duties and Responsibilities

The duties of this position include, but are not limited to:Develop a Hoh Watershed Habitat Restoration Plan in order to prioritize potential restoration actionsEvaluate and monitor activities that pose a potential impact to fish, aquatic and riparian habitat, and water quality and quantityInteract with landowners and regulatory agencies to achieve the highest protection for fisheries, aquatic, and riparian resourcesIdentify, prioritize, and implement cooperative habitat protection, restoration, and enhancement measures with state and private resource managers to enhance the natural resources of the Hoh Tribe's Usual and Accustomed AreaConduct habitat monitoring, inventories, and other activities as necessary to maintain a current information base utilizing Geographic Positioning Systems and Geographic Information System technology, aerial photos, and other mapping toolsCommunicate and coordinate issues and information with the Natural Resources Director and other Hoh Natural Resource StaffProvide technical support to policy representatives of the Hoh TribeParticipate in meetings, trainings, and conferences that increase ability to achieve the aboveOther duties as assignedSkills and Specifications

May occasionally work odd or extended hours and on weekend days as program objectives and needs dictateAbility to understand and communicate ecological, geological, and hydrologic concepts to both scientific and non-scientific audiencesAbility to work independently with minimal supervisionWork with fisheries technicians in data collection, restoration, monitoring, inventory, and enhancement projectsAbility to carry/lift 40 pounds when necessaryAbility to walk several miles a day in uneven, hilly terrainAbility to work outdoors in inclement weather in and around water for extended periodsAbility to operate small hand toolsAbility to sit and work at a computer workstation for several hoursAbility to work with diverse stakeholders and build partnershipsAbility to problem-solve and think creativelyAbility to travel throughout the Olympic Peninsula and occasionally beyond for staff meetings, conferences, etc.Desire to work with Native Americans and live in a small isolated coastal communityAdhere to the personnel policies and drug and alcohol policiesSubmit to and clear a pre-employment alcohol and drug test, and criminal background checkEducation and Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Fisheries, Wildlife Science, Natural Resource Management, Forestry, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Policy, or a closely related field.Experience or education working in the field of natural resource management, fish conservation, and/or aquatic habitat restoration.Experience with river restoration principles, methods, and practices, including understanding engineering design/construction concepts; restoration project construction and management desired.Experience with project permitting related to aquatic restoration projects and in-water work (i.e., federal and state permits)Budget management and grant writing experience preferredUnderstanding of natural resource management issues relevant to the conservation of salmonids and their habitats in Washington StateValid driver’s license. Driver’s License must not contain any restrictions that would prevent an employee from operating a GSA vehicle or complying with the Tribe’s Vehicle Policy.Experience using MS Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
