About the Smithsonian Institution and the National Museum of African American History and CultureThe Smithsonian Institution (SI) is the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo. The Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) is the nation’s largest cultural destination devoted exclusively to exploring, documenting, and showcasing the African American story and its impact on American and world history. The Museum opened to the public on September 24, 2016, and has hosted hundreds of public programs while actively collecting items to document the history of enslavement, art history, and contemporary social justice movements.Main Focus, the Opportunity, and Key ResponsibilitiesThe incumbent reports to the Director and serves as the Associate Director for Curatorial Affairs (Associate Director) at NMAAHC with executive responsibilities for developing, directing, and managing the Museum’s departments of curatorial, research, and scholarship activities. Responsibilities include:Strategy and Planning
Provides vision, leadership, and direction to Curatorial Affairs in the planning and development of museum exhibitions, digital content, and public programs.Makes policy and procedural decisions concerning Curatorial Affairs operations and programs.Oversees the development and control of the Curatorial Affairs budget.Cross-Institutional Leadership and Team ManagementCollaborates with senior leaders in developing broad policy guidelines for scholarly activities.Reviews and evaluates proposals for new scholarly programs and exhibitions.Develops performance standards for direct reports and evaluates their performance regularly.External Communications/RelationshipsPerforms historical research resulting in authoritative scholarly contributions.Participates in national and international conferences and serves on museum committees.Candidate ProfileIdeal candidates will display the following skills and qualities:Passion for the MissionA commitment to public engagement and the visitor experience, with a deep appreciation for the Museum’s collections and history.Strategic Leadership and Management AcumenMinimum five to seven years of management experience in a museum or related institution, with the ability to build and lead diverse teams.Research, Scholarship, and Curatorial Affairs LeadershipA sophisticated understanding of art, history, and culture, along with a robust record of exhibitions and scholarly publications.Building Relationships and Using InfluenceAbility to establish rapport and cultivate relationships across all levels of the Museum.EducationAdvanced degree (PhD or EdD preferred) in art history, history, museum administration, or equivalent experience.Compensation and BenefitsSalary is competitive, ranging from $170,000 – $185,000, with a comprehensive benefits package.
