The laboratory assistant obtains and processes clinical specimens for testing and performs various clerical duties in the clinical laboratory. Assigned job duties are performed independently and he/she assists other personnel in the operation of the laboratory. He delivers reports to nursing units and communicates with the responsible health care providers via mail, telephone, and fax. He is under the supervision of the Phlebotomy Supervisor and Administrative Director, Laboratory.II. TECHNICAL SKILLS/JOB SPECIFIC SKILLS/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

TELEPHONE SKILLS

- Demonstrates hospital telephone etiquette by answering the phones promptly, courteously and identifying department and self.POLICIES/PROCEDURES

- Promotes positive co-worker relationships through teamwork and cooperation. Understands and supports the needs of individuals in other departments and promotes conflict resolution. - Documentation is accurate, complete and legible.Greets patients, identifies self and procedure prior to performing specimen collection procedure.Accurately identifies patients following all hospital and laboratory protocol.Collects blood specimens from outpatients and inpatients of all ages by venipuncture and capillary puncture minimizing trauma to the patient.Assists patients in the collection of urine specimens.Uses the appropriate tools and equipment in specimen collection.Accurately labels primary and secondary specimen containers ensuring positive identification at all times.Assesses suitability of submitted specimens for testing purposes.Accurately enters patient demographics and lab orders in the information system. Retrieves data from the information system. Utilizes other computer programs as needed.Prepares, processes, maintains, and distributes laboratory records and reports as appropriate.Performs and documents routine inventory and maintenance tasks. Notifies the supervisor when conditions are not acceptable.Communicates results, issues, routine and special circumstances to the correct person in a timely manner.Uses the appropriate specimen collection equipment for neonates, children, adults and geriatric populations. Recognizes the psycho-social needs of various age groups.Performs any other duties or responsibilities which may be assigned.IV. TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

MANDATORY:Valid Certified Phlebotomy Technician certificate issued by the state of California Department of Health ServicesPREFERRED:Acute care hospital experience preferred
