ECO Posted On March 12, 2021We are recruiting a Senior Field Research Coordinator for a federal contract we are bidding in support of ongoing fisheries research at NOAA Alaska Fisheries Science Center (AFSC)’s Auke Bay Laboratory (ABL). This position is full time, located at the AFSC’s Auke Creek field station in Juneau, AK, with limited trips to the remote Little Port Walter Marine Research Station (LPW). The position is set to begin in April 2021 for one year.The Senior Field Research Coordinator will support AFSC ABL with coordinating and conducting sampling, tagging, spawning and processing fish, husbandry support for aquaculture research, data collection, data entry, data analysis, and project reporting.Our ideal candidate would be someone with experience in salmon husbandry techniques, R statistical packages, data entry, experience working on small boats and in remote Alaska areas. Ability to lift up to 44lbs without assistance and maintain a positive attitude despite adverse working conditions is a must.DutiesServe as Senior Coordinator for Fieldwork which includes work on vessel surveys and research field stations. The contractor shall:
Coordinate and assist in fish collection, sampling, coded wire tagging, and spawning activitiesCoordinate and assist in salmon scale collection, preservation, and digitizationCoordinate and assist with fish husbandry work including maintenance of equipmentCoordinate and assist in daily and weekly environmental data collection
Coordinate and participate in all staging and de-staging of fieldwork including:
Coordinate and participate in installation, conversion, and removal of NOAA’s research salmon weirs on Auke Creek and Sashin Creek over the course of the work seasonCoordinate and participate in maintenance required for safe, daily operation of NOAA’s research salmon weirs on Auke Creek and Sashin CreekParticipate and lead field personnel in all cleaning, assembly, disassembly, and dissemination of all related elements to research projects, includes data, samples, supplies and equipment
Data Analysis and Summarization including:
Assist in data entry into spreadsheets and databases, analysis of data using R statistical package, and literature reviewShall assist in preparation of reports and manuscripts related to climate change, genetics, growth, condition, migration, and survival of salmonids and other commercially important species
QualificationsBachelor’s degree or higher with emphasis in fisheries, aquaculture, genetics, biology, natural science, or mathematicsThree (3) years of experience in related field or combination of such totaling seven (7) years combined education and experience. A higher education Degree in science may be substituted for experienceExperience in salmon husbandry techniquesExperience in using R statistical packagesExperience working in remote Alaska areas for extended hours in adverse environmental conditions, including experience working on or operating powered small boats in Alaska watersExperience safely operating power tools necessary for field workDue to the physical nature of fieldwork the candidate must be able to lift and move items up to 20kg without assistanceCompensation : Salary commensurate with experience.How to ApplyOnly qualified applicants with a bachelor’s degree and the requisite experience, including prior work in remote areas for extended hours under adverse conditions, need to apply.
