The Town of Clayton is seeking applicants for a School Resource Officer for our Police Department. The School Resource Officer is in the Police Department and reports to the Police Sergeant and/or Police Lieutenant.

Responsibilities:Patrol school campus in patrol car, on foot, by bicycle or other appropriate means; interacts with students, parents, faculty, and school administrators.Respond to calls for assistance, complaints, suspicious activity, domestic disputes, loud and disruptive behavior, and other needs; communicate with school officials and police department staff.Investigate traffic accidents on campus; issue traffic citations; direct traffic and participate in other emergency operation activities.Perform investigations of possible crimes through observation, questioning witnesses, and gathering physical evidence; arrest and process criminal suspects.Advise the public on laws and local ordinances; testify in court; execute search warrants; serve papers as needed.Regulate and direct vehicular traffic at busy times or when traffic signal malfunctions or accidents require; maintain order at public gatherings.Perform and coordinate security at school-related events.Operate a two-way radio to receive instructions and information from or report information to police headquarters.Perform other law enforcement duties at the request and direction of supervisors and police department command staff.A normal schedule is associated with this position which involves working 40 hours per week within a Monday-Friday timeframe (specific times set by supervisor). Subject to call back work on nights, weekends, and holidays as required.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES / COMPETENCIES:The individual in this position should possess thorough knowledge of state and federal laws, local ordinances, and policies of the police department, especially relating to arrest, search and seizure, and traffic control. They should have the ability to build and maintain cooperative and effective relations with citizens, coworkers, other law enforcement agencies, and Town officials; communicate clearly over radio and technology; act with sound judgment in routine and emergency situations; present effective court testimony; and prepare clear and concise activity reports. Skills in the use of firearms and other police equipment and in the application of self-defense tactics are also required.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:High School Diploma. Successful completion of/or enrollment in a NC Basic Law Enforcement training program.
