The College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, research-focused, tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor position in Physical Oceanography. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Dean.We seek a faculty member who will develop and maintain a vigorous, externally funded research program. We particularly welcome applications from individuals with interests that complement or strengthen existing College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences (CEOAS) research programs in ocean circulation, ocean-atmosphere interactions, coastal oceanography, and climate variability and change. Candidates with a focus on remote sensing, large-scale and mesoscale ocean circulation, data assimilation, or related areas of physical oceanography are especially encouraged to apply. The faculty member will participate in the CEOAS undergraduate and graduate teaching programs and in the advising and mentoring of graduate students and post-doctoral scholars.There is an expectation that the successful candidate will secure external research funding to support 60% of his/her full-time salary. For research-focused positions, it is CEOAS policy to confer indefinite tenure when promoted to full Professor, with the indefinite tenure granted on a 12-month 0.75 FTE basis, but term in Associate Professor rank is not limited to a fixed number of years. The OSU benefits package includes several options for health/dental/life insurance, retirement, as well as a program for reduced tuition for qualified dependent.The College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences is an internationally recognized leader in the study of the Earth as an integrated system. It operates numerous state-of-the-art laboratories and three oceanographic research vessels, the 177-foot ocean-going Oceanus, the 84-foot coastal research vessel Pacific Storm, and the 54-foot coastal research vessel Elakha. The College has an annual budget of more than $50 million, with support coming from the National Science Foundation, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and other federal agencies. It has more than 100 faculty, 200 graduate students, and 600 undergraduate students. Graduate programs include Master’s and PhD degrees in Ocean, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences; Geology; and Geography and a Master’s degree in Marine Resource Management. The college has undergraduate programs in Earth Sciences and Environmental Sciences, with several minors and certificate programs.Position Duties75% – Research/Scholarship:Establish and maintain a nationally and internationally recognized research program in the area of emphasis, evidenced by the publication of scholarly work in peer-reviewed journals, conference proceedings, and books.15% – Teaching and Advising:Mentor and advise post-doctoral investigators and graduate and undergraduate students; teach and develop high-quality undergraduate and graduate courses in physical oceanography or related areas. Develop courses designed to promote experiential learning and success of students from diverse backgrounds.10% – Service:Provide service to the college, university, and national and international communities, to sustain and promote the research and educational missions, through committee memberships, reviews, and research planning and leadership activities. Assist in efforts to make research results available and accessible to the public; contribute to educational equity by providing opportunities for students from underrepresented groups; enable the advancement of diverse perspectives; and demonstrate a commitment to diversity and inclusion both within the College and in activities in the larger academic community, including efforts promoting equitable outcomes among learners of diverse and underrepresented identity groups.Minimum/Required QualificationsPh.D. in ocean sciences or related discipline by the start of employment.For appointment at the Associate Professor level, the candidate must have teaching experience, research experience, and a publications record commensurate with these levels to be granted the same rank at Oregon State University.A strong scholarly potential demonstrated by a record of peer-reviewed publications and a clearly defined research agenda commensurate with academic rank.Potential for establishing an externally funded research program, demonstrated by independent formulation and articulation of compelling scientific goals and proposed methods to achieve those goals.Potential for excellence in teaching and mentoring, demonstrated by clarity of written and spoken scientific expression, ability to work within a team, and commitment to scientific methods and discipline.Proficiency in oral and written English.A commitment to educational equity in a multicultural setting and to advancing the participation of diverse groups and supporting diverse perspectives.
