This professional position is assigned to the District Court Division of the State's Attorney's office, with responsibility for presenting assigned cases and trial work in the District Court. Supervision is received from the Chief Assistant State's Attorney (District Court), the Deputy State's Attorney and/or the State's Attorney.Juvenile Division

This professional position is assigned to the Juvenile Division of the State's Attorney's Office, with responsibility for presenting assigned cases and trial work in the Juvenile Court as well as Circuit Court litigation of youth charged as adults. This position must coordinate investigations with law enforcement investigating crimes committed by juveniles, particularly focusing on sexual offenses. This position is supervised by the Chief Assistant State's Attorney (Juvenile).TOTAL COMPENSATION PACKAGE:Frederick County offers an extensive compensation package to reflect how highly we value our employees. Analyze and assess cases, legal research, pleading preparation, witness interviews, trial preparation, settlement and litigation of casesAssist law enforcement officers and agencies in their investigations and charging decisionsProvide legal advice and/or assistance to the general public pertaining to criminal and traffic mattersPerform other duties as assignedAdditional Juvenile Division duties:

Perform all case preparation and litigation for juvenile mattersAnalyze juvenile charging documents for appropriate charges and evidentiary needs for trialAssist law enforcement and multi-disciplinary teams in the resolution of crimes against children which involve juvenile perpetrators; prosecute these cases in court as well as handling all pre-charge options for these youthFollow cases from petition through adjudication, violations of probation, and review hearings if applicablePrepare for disposition hearings which requires multiple communications with the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services case managers and defense counsel, as well as review of psychological and psychiatric evaluations and disposition reports from counselors, school officials, etc.Assist & provide legal advice and training to police agencies regarding charging decisions, including school resource officers, patrol officers and detectives calling for guidanceLitigate cases from charging through sentencing of youth charged as adults (felony prosecution in Circuit Court)Litigate waiver and transfer hearings to or from adult jurisdiction when appropriateLitigate shelter and detention hearings as well as bond reviews for juveniles charged as adultsLitigate adult violation of probation matters and adult felony matters as assignedNegotiate resolutions for juvenile respondents and victims with law enforcement pre-charge, and with our diversion programs as well as after petition in the courtroomTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Graduation from an accredited law schoolAdmission to the Bar of the State of MarylandSome work experience in case analysis, trial preparation and preparation of case documentsKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Considerable knowledge of legal principles and proceduresAbility to effectively evaluate and try a caseAbility to effectively obtain information through interview, interrogation and other legal research methodsAbility to make quick and well-reasoned case decisions under pressured circumstancesDiscretion and good judgment in working with sensitive information, with ability to maintain appropriate confidentialityAbility to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, attorneys and others in the judicial system; law enforcement officers and agencies, and the general public, including the ability to give knowledgeable and practical advice to individuals who are emotionally distraughtStrong and effective spoken and written (English) communication skills, including the ability to maintain clear, accurate case filesPREFERENCE MAY BE GIVEN FOR:

Prosecutorial experience in a State's Attorney's OfficeMaryland Rule 19 experience, or a comparable student prosecutor experience in another state and/or a judicial clerkship in any jurisdictionLaw experience as a practicing attorney in the State of MarylandCompetitive trial advocacy or competitive moot courtCriminal clinical practice experience as a law studentCompletion of a law student internship with the Frederick County State's Attorney's OfficeExperience communicating and working with families in crisisExperience working on issues related to sexual violence and offendingBilingual skills in SpanishPHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / WORKING CONDITIONS:
