Central Alabama Veterans Healthcare System (CAVHCS) is seeking optometrists to provide services at the main campus in Tuskegee, the Montgomery VA Clinic, and the Robert S. Poydasheff VA Clinic in Columbus. The optometrist provides ocular evaluation and treatment as part of the health services of CAVHCS. Due to the patient population, optometry service is integral to maintaining vision in the presence of diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetes, and cataracts.Duties Include, but are not limited to the following:

Eye examinations in regularly scheduled clinics - provides diagnostic, preventative, and therapeutic eye care for Veterans.Provides clinical supervision to student interns when applicable.Provides the customer with consistent information according to established policies and procedures.Participate actively in performance improvement and attend assigned meetings or process action teams.Work collaboratively with other specialties.Follow VA directives and policies and maintain current in BLS.Possess computer skills to access and input typed data on each patient into the computerized patient record system (CPRS).Provides direct clinical supervision of health technicians and other staff as appropriate.Supports the TECS (Technology-based Eye Care Services) program.Establishes professional working relationships with other clinical service providers within the medical center and outlying clinics.Provide telephone and e-consults consultations as needed.Provides prescribed medical treatment and personal care services to veterans in need of Optometry services.Documents observations, assessments, and changes in patient's condition.Attend mandatory trainings, such as, VA Voices, Own the Moment, comply with CME requirements in the specialty of Optometry.Must be aware and compliant of VA SAIL metrics and VA Performance Measures.Performs other directly related duties as assigned, including management of community care referrals as needed.

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic RequirementsUnited States Citizenship.

Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.English Language Proficiency.

Optometrists appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).Education.

Degree of doctor of optometry resulting from a course of education in optometry. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools or colleges approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.Licensure or Registration.

Licensed to practice optometry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Optometrists are required to possess full and unrestricted licensure and to maintain a current registration in their State of licensure if this is a requirement of the particular State.Preferred Experience:

Completion of an Optometry Residency at a Veteran Affairs Medical Center is highly preferred. Two years of optometric practice or its equivalent. One year of approved residency training or its creditable equivalent acceptable to the Council on Optometric Education of the American Optometric Association is acceptable in lieu of the 2 years of practice.
