The Department of Medicine at the University of California San Diego (UCSD) School of Medicine is actively recruiting to fill the position of Chief, Division of Infectious Diseases and Global Public Health.The Department of Medicine and Division of Infectious Diseases and Global Public Health are committed to academic excellence and diversity across the faculty, staff, and student body. The UCSD Infectious Diseases and Global Public Health division consists of over 80 faculty and 130 staff members. Faculty at UC San Diego Health and the VA San Diego Medical Center engage in clinical care, research, and teaching.Division faculty receive over $20 million in grant funding each year. The Division has innovative basic, translational, clinical, epidemiology, and sociobehavioral research programs in infectious disease across a broad diversity of pathogens including viruses (e.g., HIV, SARS-CoV-2, herpesviruses, hepatitis B, C, and D), bacteria (e.g., mycobacteria, enteric bacteria, bacterial antimicrobial resistance), fungi (e.g., coccidioidomycosis, aspergillosis, resistant Candida), and parasites (e.g., toxoplasmosis, trypanosomiasis, malaria). Novel therapies are also being developed in several areas, including antiviral drug and novel diagnostic test development in the AntiViral Research Center (AVRC) and the use of bacteriophages for antimicrobial resistant bacterial and mycobacterial pathogens in the Center for Innovative Phage Applications and Therapeutics (IPATH). The Division also has an outstanding general ID fellowship with clinical educator and research tracks. These fellowship tracks are supported in part by three T32 funded fellowship programs for general infectious diseases, HIV and other pandemic viruses, and epidemiology to support the research development of trainees.The Department is interested in candidates who have demonstrated passion for delivery of outstanding and innovative patient care, a track record of outstanding research, excellent teaching, successful leadership experience, and a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.The appointment is intended to be at the Associate or Full Professor level. Appointment series will be Ladder Rank (tenure track) or a combination of Ladder Rank and In Residence. Rank and series of appointment will be based on skills and qualifications of the candidate. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and based on University of California pay scales, within the range of $292,000 to $392,000.Qualifications

Basic qualifications

(required at time of application)Candidates must have an MD, MD/PhD, or equivalent degree.Candidates must have, or be eligible for, a California medical license or equivalent certification/permit as determined by the Medical Board of California. Candidates must also be board certified or eligible in Infectious Diseases.Candidates must have demonstrated leadership experience in academic medicine, clinical practice, or professional societies.Candidates should have national recognition in clinical, translational, and/or basic research.Candidates must have requisite experience and leadership qualities to develop a vision for how to sustain and grow all facets of the division’s missions as well as foster a collaborative and collegial work environment.Candidates must be of high character who lead by example and in a consistent manner.Candidates must relate well to a wide variety of constituents; be open to differences; lead effectively up and down the organization; build diverse networks; and treat differences fairly and equitably.Candidates must have strong interpersonal skills and be able to work cooperatively and congenially within a diverse academic and clinical environment.Preferred Qualifications and Desired AttributesHistory of extramural research funding and publications in high impact journals.Demonstrated commitment to quality and safety in healthcare.Skilled facilitator able to inspire trust and confidence among UCSD’s diverse internal and external constituencies.Ability and willingness to engage broadly across UCSD community as an institutional leader and to be a highly visible ambassador for the division, the department, and the school of medicine both internally and in the San Diego community.The position requires strong leadership and management skills, and proven abilities to concurrently manage multiple complex programs.
