ACS’s Society Business Solutions (SBS) is focused on serving the needs of ACS members and maximizing the value of the benefits and member-focused services that we provide across all ACS products. Under the office of the COO, SBS supports all Society Programs and is focused on ensuring value and business alignment through data research, strategic planning, and web communications. The Research & Decision Support (RDS) — a unit within SBS — supports the enterprise in better understanding ACS membership, prospective customers, and the market landscape for ACS offerings.
Position SummaryReporting to the RDS manager, this position is crucial to the success of data-related efforts within SBS. The incumbent will provide advanced analytical insights, sound hypotheses, and informed recommendations as they lead key initiatives and undertake ongoing and new projects for the team. These efforts include investigating data sources, creating models, developing data visualizations, and building processes that lead to better system integrations and automation of output. This position enables RDS to continue to provide expanded support to all divisions within ACS, requires exceptional attention to detail, and the ability to identify opportunities for process improvement. It supports all society data initiatives, in addition to the ACS Education Division and its specific needs.
Work DesignWorks with team, independently, and under general direction from manager. Acts as team lead for data-related efforts, and triages requests accordingly with other data team members. Identifies and recommends solutions to a variety of routine and non-routine problems. Sound understanding of relational databases and unstructured data, along with advanced knowledge of statistics. Creative, strategic, collaborative, flexible, adaptable, and political approaches are essential in this position. Project administration will accompany the creative and strategic responsibilities.
Position AccountabilitiesServes as the data and business analytics manager for supported Society Programs divisions.Assists with the development & tracking of KPIs and providing recommendations based on trend data.Manages and cleans data to prepare for analysis, review, or reporting.Serves as a key liaison to the ACS Education Division supporting related data management tasks and larger data projects.Supports the creation and curation of databases and dashboards monitoring and reporting constituent engagement and other KPIs.Comfortable with presenting key findings, leading data gathering exercises, and conducting training.Conducts ad hoc analyses such as descriptive statistics, significance testing, and correlation.Participates in other projects and endeavors as assigned/needed.
Essential Job RequirementsBachelor’s or advanced degree in data science or business analytics preferred. Minimum of 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 3 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD without experience; or equivalent work experience. Candidate must be comfortable with exploring new technology and able to learn it quickly; knowledge of technology systems & data visualization tools (i.e., Tableau) and programming languages (i.e., SQL, Python); experience or transferable skills that demonstrate the ability to understand & communicate trends in chemical education; data & performance management; data analysis & database creation; comfort with/ability to learn platforms to support data management; strong interpersonal, analytical, written & oral communication & organizational skills; knowledge of machine learning/natural language processing techniques and algorithms are a plus; strong customer service skills for interaction with internal stakeholders, students, governance committees, & stakeholders such as donors. Cultural/global awareness and experience is highly desirable.
This position will be primarily based in the Washington D.C. (or applicable) office. ACS employees work a hybrid work schedule, consisting of working onsite, three days per week. ACS employees are in the office on Tuesday and Wednesday with the third in-office day scheduled in consultation with the manager. While always welcome to work in the office, employees may work the other two days of the week from a location of their choice. New employees are immediately eligible for this hybrid work arrangement. ACS offers relocation assistance, if applicable.
