$165,630.40 - $233,188.80 AnnuallyPosition DescriptionThe City of Tacoma is seeking a Chief Deputy City Attorney to join an exciting and rewarding municipal government law practice that provides work-life balance, great coworkers, and wonderful benefits. This role offers crucial assistance to the City Attorney by managing special projects and supporting with administrative functions. Additionally, it involves providing legal counsel and recommending courses of action to various City departments on many interesting and challenging legal issues.Essential Duties And ResponsibilitiesProvide legal advice, counsel, risk analysis and course of action recommendations to the City Council, City Attorney and City departments, offices and divisions in various areas related to municipal government and general government utility operations.As part of the office management team, provide crucial administrative support to the City Attorney, including supervision of staff and preparation of budget proposals for the City Attorney’s Office.Manage special projects as assigned.Conduct, manage or monitor litigation and administrative proceedings before administrative tribunals and municipal, state, federal, and appellate courts on behalf of the City arising from tort, contract, real property, and general government utilities operations; manage, monitor and negotiate and dispose of claims and suits filed against the City.Negotiate and draft complex legal documents, including coordination with all City departments.Perform research; prepare legal opinions; and draft proposed resolutions, ordinances, and related amendments.Provide advice to other City legal staff on litigation strategy, evaluation of potential settlements, and ideas related to preparation of cases.Communicate and coordinate regularly with appropriate department/division managers to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities.Respond to citizen's questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner.Provide assistance to City Attorney regarding departmental administrative matters.Attend meetings of boards, commissions and committees as assigned.QualificationsMinimum Education: Juris DoctorateMinimum Experience: 8 years of professional legal counsel experience (administrative, civil, criminal) including prior supervisory, managerial and/or subject-matter expert experience.Licensing, Certifications And Other RequirementsAdmission to the Washington State Bar Association and License to Practice Law in Washington.ApplyInterested individuals should apply online and attach a detailed resume and cover letter describing your experience, training, and expertise as it relates to the responsibilities of this position.
