Major Responsibilities:Determination of appropriate mammographic technique and positioning of patient. The mammographer is to actively promote a positive and professional team effort to increase customer satisfaction.

Positions patient and adjusts equipment, secures, and immobilizes support devices as needed to tactfully perform proceduresDetermines appropriate radiographic technique based on anatomy and patient's condition to obtain quality films to provide to the radiologistsSecures history from patient regarding reason for prescribed tests and records on appropriate form for the radiologist's reviewParticipates in team efforts to reduce wait times, report turn around times, and reduce the amount of lost filmsWorks in conjunction with registration to expedite the patients through the departmentWhen necessary adjusts mammogram schedule to include late and add on patientsWhen necessary answers phones, schedules patients, answers questions and pages physiciansWhen necessary files reports, hangs, and takes down filmsTactfully calls patients back for additional views, answers their questions and schedules them promptly and appropriately

Adherence to all accepted safety standards and practices to ensure patient safety and quality patient care

Maintains compliance with established safety standards to protect patients and staff at all timesAdheres to age specific standardsMaintains supplies and cleanliness for assigned room on a daily basisAssures accuracy of exam performed and requisitionPerforms clerical duties such as maintaining adequate patient records, answering phones, scheduling examinations, giving instructions to patients in preparation for examination to provide smooth and continuous departmental services.

Coordination of quality control tasks (checking your radiographic films to ensure optimal quality, etc.)

Checks film quality to assure optimal quality is attained and correct film labeling is providedPerforms quality control activities, responds to fluctuations in processing and equipment changesCoordinates patient flow, and communicates with radiologists and other hospital personnel to ensure exams are completed in a timely fashion.Prepares mammographic rooms for procedures, maintains equipment, and supplies as requiredReports deficient inventory of supplies and linen to Lead TechnologistLabels radiographic films according to department quality assurance standards and criteriaPrepares mixtures and/or dyes as necessary following prescribed formulasCoordinates the flow of patients into and out of the department in accordance with established departmental proceduresTransports patients into and out of department as necessary

Participation in problem-solving issues addressing patients, department operations, quality assurance procedures, interdepartmental relationships and employee morale

Maintains current ARRT certification, CPR, and state accreditation.Maintains positive "guest relations" and telephone etiquette following prescribed departmental policies and procedures

Operation of more advanced and sophisticated mammographic equipment, like Mammotome, stereotactic guided breast biopsies

Assists radiologists with specialty procedures to include ductograms, stereo core biopsies, and Mammotome procedures requiring additional experience and knowledgeOperates all mammographic equipment in all the rooms

Provision of instruction and orientation to technologists and new technologists to effectively participate in the department.

Provides direction and instruction to technologists in need of assistance with specific proceduresProvides direction and instruction to all radiologic technology students

Education/Experience Required:Must be a graduate from an accredited AMA School of Radiology with 1 to 2 years experience as a General Radiographer or sonographer and 40 hours of specialized training and continuing education in mammography. Knowledge of breast anatomy is required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:Knowledge of HIS system and basic knowledge of RIS systemEffective interpersonal skillsAbility to interact with customers from all levelsIDNS accreditation in medical radiation technologyAmerican Registry of Radiologic Technologists registered (ARRT)CPR certified

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:Must be able to make independent professional decisions pertaining to high quality patient careHigh degree of technical skills requiredMust be able to function with minimal assistance in performing job activitiesMust be conscientious in practicing high quality patient careAbility to work rotating shifts any day of the weekRadiation exposureMust be able to deal with extremely ill patientsAbility to lift and/or move patients. Heavy lifting: Lifting 50 to 100 pounds occasionally and/or 25 to 50 pounds frequently and/or 10 to 20 pounds constantly.Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with established time constraintsMay be exposed to hazardous materials and life-threatening diseasesKnowledge of breast anatomy requiredNeed to recognize patients experiencing fear or anxietyNeeds to be able to recognize needs and behaviors of a variety of age groups of patients treated, i.e. understand the differences of female growth and development, and look for signs of normal aging; degree of understanding and physical limitation related to age
