Laboratory Analyst II

conducts a series of basic and complex chemical, physical, or microbiological analyses on environmental samples from a variety of sources. Accurate and valid data from these analyses are used to detect the presence of any harmful substances in order to control or eliminate potential sources of pollution. The analyst assists clients in maintaining the proper treatment and processing of water and wastewater. Clients include wastewater plants, water filtration plants, contractors, and the general public.

This position involves strict adherence to standardized methodologies and procedures on routine recurring samples. The analyst uses good judgment and follows established procedures when prioritizing and scheduling analyses. The analyst also provides technical support to members of the Operations Section.

Essential Functions

Performs a variety of chemical, physical, and microbiological analyses on aqueous and non-aqueous samplesOperates basic to specialized laboratory instruments such as pH, conductivity, turbidity, and ion-selective meters; balances, digestion blocks, ovens, incubators, auto-analyzers, autoclaves, auto-titrators, and spectrophotometersUtilizes specific instrumentation or computer software to complete analysesPerforms all analyses in accordance with standard operating proceduresProduces acceptable data in accordance with Federal and State regulations (Clean Water and Safe Drinking Water Acts) and Laboratory quality control requirementsReviews, approves, and enters resulting data into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and other databasesReviews and validates data produced by other analysts in the LIMSPrepares necessary standards, reagents, and media for chemical, physical, and microbiological analyses in accordance with standard operating procedures and quality control requirementsPrepares samples for subsequent analysis, including filtration, autoclaving, digestion, and extractionMaintains, cleans, and prepares glassware, tubes, and other laboratory appliances for use in analytical proceduresAnalyzes quarterly and annual Proficiency Testing samples for assigned analysesAssists in writing and updating laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)Establishes daily routine to meet work deadlinesPerforms routine preventative maintenance on analytical instrumentationMaintains analytical, quality control, and maintenance records in accordance with Laboratory QA Manual and SOPsAssists Laboratory Analyst I with workload when necessaryAssists Chemists/Microbiologists with sample preparationDrives a vehicle to conduct WSSC Water businessOther Functions

Aids laboratory personnel in keeping the laboratory area safe, neat, and cleanMaintains sample storage areas including rotating storage areas and final disposal of samplesCross trains lab personnel as neededPerforms other related duties as assignedWork Environment And Physical Demands

Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biology, Microbiology, or Environmental Sciences1+ years of relevant environmental laboratory experienceORAssociate’s degree in Chemistry, Biology, Microbiology, or Environmental Sciences3+ years of progressively responsible environmental laboratory experienceORHigh school diploma or equivalent5+ years of progressively responsible environmental laboratory experience
