Scope of PositionThe Surgical Technologist (ST) functions as an integral member of a team of care providers in the Operating Rooms of the Ohio State University Surgery Center. The surgical teams reflect a culture of cooperation, enthusiasm, and mutual respect. The team provides patient care and supportive services that are directed towards achieving optimal patient care outcomes, improving customer service levels, reducing the length of hospitalization, and decreasing costs. Patients and their families will experience the benefits of patient-focused care through the integrated skills of all care team members.Position SummaryThe Surgical Technologist performs technical skills related to intra-operative patient care. The ST is generally assigned to perform the scrub role in various surgical procedures and also performs routine unit tasks. They provide emergency care measures as appropriate and assist in meeting the patient's emotional needs. The ST follows universal precautions, safe handling guidelines, and all other infection control standards. They provide for the safety/security of self and others and follow special precautions as related to patient care. They maintain a clean and organized perioperative unit. The ST promotes a positive attitude to staff, families, and patients/guests while maintaining patient confidentiality. The ST is an unclassified professional staff position working under the direct supervision of PCC-RN and under the general supervision of the Nurse Manager. The ST performs all tasks in a cost-effective manner without compromising quality of care, meets hospital continuing education and certification requirements, and upholds the goals and objectives of the OSU Surgery Center. The ST contributes to organizational effectiveness and demonstrates career growth and development.Minimum Education RequiredHS Graduate or Equivalent or equivalent combination of education and experienceRequired QualificationsMust be a high school graduate or possess the GED, and must have completed a formal Surgical Technology Training Program or the equivalent. Previous experience in the Operating Room as a Surgical Technologist is preferred.
