Sentara is recognized nationally for clinical quality and safety, and is strategically focused on innovation and creating an extraordinary health care experience for our patients and members.Essential Duties And ResponsibilitiesResponsibilities include the following and other duties as may be assigned, as necessary:Advises the Company and senior management on federal and state regulatory and compliance matters, including identifying areas of risk and making suggestions for improvement.Advises the Company on employment-related issues such as workers’ compensation, termination, sexual harassment, workplace safety, wage and overtime standards, privacy rights, discrimination, and labor relations.Prepares EEOC position statements, mediation statements, briefs, and settlement agreements.Works with HR in developing and implementing human resources strategic initiatives.Assists in creating workplace policies/handbooks that are in compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws; assists in developing and implementing in-house training.Assists in preparing, reviewing, and negotiating Company contracts, requests for proposals, and other legal documents.Anticipates and mitigates potential legal risks and develops strategies to avoid costly litigation.Coordinates and manages outside counsel and litigation.Keeps informed of industry-specific regulations and ensures that appropriate risk management strategies are in place.Professional Experience & QualificationsMinimum of 4 years’ experience as a labor and employment lawyer in a major law firm or corporate legal department, preferably focused in health care.Experience drafting, negotiating, and interpreting collective bargaining agreements.Ability to work independently while being able to contribute successfully to cross-functional teams.Excellent organizational skills, ability to manage multiple projects at once, follow through and meet deadlines.Strong leadership, analytical, verbal, and written communication skills.Education: Juris Doctor (JD) degree from a US accredited law school is required. Candidate must be eligible for admission to the Virginia State Bar.Location of Work:The individual will reside in the Hampton Roads region and report to the Corporate HR Offices currently in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Open to individuals who may report to location in Richmond, Virginia.Job SummaryThe Assistant General Counsel provides legal services, representation, and counsel to Sentara on various matters that arise in business operations including, but not limited to, interpretation and application of laws and regulations, liability matters, and contractual relations. Provides training for leaders on relevant legal issues and assists leadership with risk identification and management.Three years of general legal experience required. Licensed to practice law in Virginia or must obtain license within one year of employment.
