Department SummaryThe Department of English and Comparative Literature at San Jose State University is seeking candidates for a pool of qualified, prospective instructors. We are most interested in hiring experienced instructors to teach courses in the First-Year Writing Program. Occasionally, we also have need of expertise in English Education, including student teacher supervision, or in Professional and Technical Writing, including in the areas of business writing, social media, and other areas of career writing. The number and variety of positions hired from this pool will vary from semester to semester, contingent upon student enrollment figures and funding.Brief Description of DutiesTeach one or more sections of first-year composition (or professional/technical communication, teacher supervision, etc.).(First-year writing instructors will) participate in a minimum of one department professional development workshop per semester.Participate in program assessment every semester and ongoing programmatic research as appropriate.Demonstrate awareness of and experience in teaching a student population of great diversity - in age, abilities, cultural background, ethnicity, religion, economic background, language background, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic preparation - using inclusive course materials, teaching strategies, and advisement.Organize classes within the

Canvas Learning Management System (LMS)

and utilize the required syllabus template.Meet as scheduled throughout the entire semester or term, in the mode assigned and listed in the schedule of classes (i.e., in-person, asynchronous, synchronous, bichronous, or hybrid).Required QualificationsMA, MFA, or PhD in Composition and Rhetoric, Professional/Technical Communication, Literature, Creative Writing, or related field (Credential, MAT, or Education PhD for Teacher supervisors)Minimum of four (4) years' experience teaching college-level writing and reading to a multicultural/multilingual student population preferred.Strong commitment to and evidence of excellence in teaching (e.g., professional development workshops, academic conferences, scholarly publications, teaching evaluations).Training in or demonstrated experience working with basic writers and/or second-language writers is highly desirable.Awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching and other comparable experience.CompensationCompensation and salary range placement are determined by qualifications and experience.
