East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust is situated within easy reach of London and Europe. The Trust is made up of three acute sites (William Harvey Hospital at Ashford, Kent and Canterbury Hospital at Canterbury and Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hospital at Margate). Pathology employs 320 staff and has an annual budget of £26 million.

East Kent Microbiology Service is centralised at the William Harvey site and is a Specialist Clinical Virology laboratory as well as a member of the UK Clinical Mycology Network, holding Specialist Mycology Service. The service is clinically led by 5 highly experienced Consultant Microbiologists.

The Microbiology department processes in excess of 550 thousand tests per year within its 4 million pound budget. We have an extensive repertoire and scope of practice with much of the latest high quality innovation and technology, for instance Bruker Maldi-ToF, Biofire film array, Abbott M2000, Enteric PCR on the BD MAX, Seegene Allplex respiratory PCR, Hologic Panther, Urine Sedimaxs and Beckman Coulter Microscan for AST. The philosophy of the department is to invest in and develop the staff, strive for excellence, and to have a forward thinking and ambitious Service Improvement plan.

In September 2017 we became a fully ISO 15189 accredited service and are recognised by the “IBMS” and the “National School for Healthcare Science” for training.

We are a dynamic team currently training Trainee Biomedical Scientists, Trainee Clinical Scientists, F2 doctors on rotation and apprentices at several levels.

Job VacanciesThere are two full time vacancies for suitably experienced, qualified and enthusiastic Biomedical Scientist at Senior level (Band 7) in Microbiology. Applicants must be HCPC registered with a minimum of 3 years experience as a Biomedical Scientist (Band 6) or above, in a busy preferably CPA, UKAS or transitioning to ISO, accredited laboratory and ideally possess an MSc or equivalent in Microbiology. Postgraduate qualifications in appropriate scientific, quality, training or management subjects at Level 7 to the value of 150 credits will be considered.

ResponsibilitiesThe successful applicant will manage laboratory sections within both sub-disciplines of Microbiology. One position will be required to undertake Training Officer responsibilities and tasks. The other candidate should ideally have a keen interest in Health and Safety and ideally have the knowledge, skills and experience to oversee the H&S Supervisors.
