Position Summary
The Costume Shop Manager will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the
costume shop associated with the area of Theatre and Dance at Austin Peay State University.
Austin Peay State University is a four-year public, doctoral-level university, with six colleges and four Chairs of Excellence. The University has an enrollment of over 9,000 students and is located in Clarksville, Tennessee, a community of an estimated 166,000 people located approximately 40 miles northwest of Nashville, TN.
Primary Duties and ResponsibilitiesWork closely with the Costume Design faculty to ensure all costumes are prepared in the allotted build time.Responsible for supervising student workers in the costume shop and in the performance spaces including ensuring students are properly trained on health and safety protocols.Responsible for the organization of the shop paperwork including the inventory of existing costumes and lending of costumes to local Theatre outlets.Assist with pulling costumes from stock, purchasing costuming items, and renting costumes when necessary.Perform other related duties as assigned.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to effectively prepare costumes for all main stage productions in the Department of Theatre and Dance, including theatrical patterning, draping, various construction techniques, dying, stitching, and crafts.Ability to manage the day-to-day operations of the costume shop, including effectively supervising costume students during shop hours.Ability to interact in an effective and appropriate manner with diverse populations, the University community and the public.Ability to maintain an accurate inventory of costumes and equipment housed in the costume shop.Ability to communicate effectively.Ability to maintain rental records.Physical Requirements
Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently.Ability to walk up stairs to retrieve costumes in storage.Required Minimum Qualifications
A minimum of five years of sewing experience.Bachelor's degree, with an MFA in Costume Technology, or equivalent, preferred.Experience with fabric dying and distressing techniques.Experience with fitting and alteration of costumes.Basic draping and costume fabrication abilities.Basic computer skills (email, internet searches, word processing, basic database creation)
