Definition and Class Characteristics

The Nevada County District Attorney's Office is hiring Criminal Attorneys II / III.

We are looking for experienced prosecutors to join our team. The Nevada County District Attorney’s Office is seeking Criminal Attorneys II / III to prosecute misdemeanor and felony cases received from State and Local Law Enforcement Agencies in Nevada County.

The Attorney II / III position will be primarily focused on a felony caseload that may include homicides, sexual assault, and other major crimes. The Attorney II / III will handle the more complex and critical cases that require sophisticated legal knowledge and experience.

The ideal candidate will be comfortable and proficient in the use of technology for the management of case information, report documentation, evidence, and information exchange. In addition, candidates must understand the various state, federal, and local laws as well as standard court procedures.

Sound communication, report writing, collaboration, and presentation skills are strongly desired. Applicants must have the ability to interact with individuals from diverse social, economic, cultural, behavioral, and environmental settings.

Examples of Duties

Interviews complainants, victims, witnesses, and clients.Prepares and participates in pleadings, arraignments, pre-trial agreements, motions, trials, responsive declarations, detention or asset seizure hearings, negotiations with opposing counsel and the courts, and the selection of jurors.Litigates criminal cases in court from start to finish including but not limited to conducting preliminary hearings, jury trials, and various evidentiary hearings.Knowledgeable in the rules of the court, rules of evidence, trial and hearing procedures, and all codes including CA Penal Codes, Vehicle Code, Welfare & Institutions, Health and Safety, and Business and Professional.Reviews law, regulations, and judicial decisions.Performs legal research.Conducts legal-related training for officers.Participates in continuing education and professional development.

Education And Experience Required

Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and graduation from an ABA, AALS, or CA State Bar-accredited law school.

Level I:

Equivalent to graduation from an accredited law school.

Level II:

Equivalent to eighteen months of experience practicing criminal law.

Level III:

Equivalent to eighteen months of experience practicing criminal law.

State Bar:

Candidate must be an active member in good standing with the State Bar of California.

Licenses And Certificates

Possession of a valid driver's license within 30 days of hire.

Background Investigation:

Qualified candidates will be subject to an extensive background investigation.
