Psych-ZSFG-Adult-AHPFull Time80420BRJob SummaryThe Alliance Health Project (AHP) is a community-based LGBTQ+ and HIV-focused clinic located at 1930 Market Street in San Francisco. We provide psychotherapy, substance use counseling, case management, support groups, psychiatry, sexual health services, clinical traineeship, and provider education and training. Our multi-disciplinary staff are a client-centered, collaborative, Harm Reduction-oriented team. We have continued to grow as a community-based clinic by anticipating and addressing the changing needs of our LGBTQ+ and HIV community members for more than 35 years. Our process of continuous improvement of service to our community includes a strong focus on cultural humility and anti-racist service provision.

The Substance Use Counselor position is part of the Behavioral Health Services team at the 1930 Market Street Service Center and is responsible for providing substance use counseling services and case management to individuals and groups who have substance use disorders, potential co-occurring mental health disorders and/or are living with HIV/AIDS. This position is part of a larger multidisciplinary behavioral health services team that includes psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, therapists, substance use counselors, case managers and psychologists.

This position provides substance use counseling and case management services to individuals living with co-occurring diagnoses of substance use issues and severe mental illness, within a Harm Reduction philosophy. Motivational Interviewing, among other interventions, is utilized to help clients explore their relationship to their substance(s) of choice, address their ambivalent feelings about making changes to their use and creating client-centered, realistic and meaningful treatment plan goals for change. This position works under the clinical supervision of a certified substance use counselor and in conjunction with other teammates. This position will involve providing case management services consisting mainly of assisting clients with appropriate referrals, including for housing, vocational and other mental health services. The services provided will largely be funded under Drug Medi-Cal funding and follow Medi-Cal guidelines for treatment, documentation, etc.Required QualificationsBachelor's degree in a related field of Social Service, Counseling, Psychology, and one year experience or equivalent combination of experience/trainingOne year of experience in providing individual and/or group substance use services in licensed Substance Use Disorder programs.Experience working with persons with HIV/AIDS and with persons identifying as LGBTQ.One year of experience working within a multidisciplinary team.A preliminary job offer and assignment may be extended pending successful background clearance.Preferred QualificationsDrug and Alcohol Counseling certificationCurrent registration, in an accredited certification program [e.g., California Association of DUI Treatment Programs (CADTP) or California Consortium of Addiction Programs and Professionals (CCAPP)]Bicultural, Experience working collaboratively with Spanish-speaking service providersFamiliar with Avatar, ARIES and Mental Health and Drug Medi-Cal systems of careExperience with documenting according to Medi-Cal standards in Avatar, both Mental Health and Drug Medi-Cal systemsUnderstanding of psychosocial issues facing the LGBTQ and HIV-affected communities.Experience working within Harm Reduction treatment models, utilizing Motivational Interviewing interventionsFamiliarity with evidence-based substance use treatment modalitiesSensitivity to working with cultural, ethnic, and racial issues.Understanding and experience working with severe mental illness.Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.Demonstrated excellence in reliability and attendance.License/CertificationWithin 1 year of employment, successful completion of San Francisco Department of Public Health Involuntary Hold 5150 certification training, and maintaining continuous certification.About UCSFThe University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is a leading university dedicated to promoting health worldwide through advanced biomedical research, graduate-level education in the life sciences and health professions, and excellence in patient care.
