All classifications require graduation from a State of California or American Bar Association (A.B.A.) accredited School of Law and membership in the California State Bar.Essential functions of the job include, but are not limited to, the following:Ensures Department services are provided with exceptional customer service and the highest level of ethical standards.Acts in the role of deputy city prosecutor in enforcing local Charter and municipal code requirements and shall have the same rights, powers, duties and immunities of a City prosecutor.Researches and renders legal opinions to City officials, staff and municipal boards and commissions. Drafts, reviews and revises various legal documents including ordinances, resolutions, motions, contracts, leases, legal opinions and memoranda, and agenda reports.Reviews and checks specifications, insurance, bonds and other documents. Confers with and advises City departments and boards and commissions concerning their respective duties, powers, functions and obligations; attends meetings of the City Council and City boards and commissions, as needed.Provides advice regarding compliance with Public Records Act and responses to subpoenas.May represent the City in a variety of legal actions, including declaratory and injunctive relief, extraordinary writs, eminent domain, appeals, administrative proceedings and other legal actions.Drives on City business as necessary.Assumes responsibility for ensuring the duties of the position are performed in a safe, efficient manner.Performs other related duties as assigned or as the situation requires.Minimum RequirementsKnowledge Of:Administrative laws and practices.Court procedures and rules.Laws, Codes and court decisions.Principles, methods and practices of legal research and investigation.One or more areas of municipal law, including but not limited to, municipal code enforcement, public contracting, procurement, land use, Proposition 26/218, and/or open government and public records laws.Knowledge Of And Skill In:Exceptional customer service practices.Skill In:Making independent judgments and decisions based on standard policy or procedure.Ability To:Provide exceptional customer service practices to those utilizing the services of the City Attorney's Office.Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.Define issues, analyze problems, evaluate alternatives and make sound recommendations.Develop necessary skills from on-the-job training and meet the standards of performance or the classification by the end of the probationary period.Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, City officials and departments, court officials, fellow employees, and the public.Exercise judgment and discretion in problem situations. Research and analyze data.Speak before groups of people.Work independently.Other CharacteristicsWillingness to:Work the necessary hours and times to accomplish goals, objectives, and required tasks of the City Attorney's Office and client departments.Assume responsibility for maintaining a safe working environment.Experience RequirementsThe ideal candidate will have up to three years’ experience in the practice of municipal law and/or municipal code enforcement.Assistant City AttorneyThis management classification performs complex, responsible professional legal work without extensive direct supervision and exercises significant independent judgment while under the general supervision of the Senior Assistant City Attorney, Principal Assistant City Attorney Chief Assistant City Attorney, or the City Attorney.Experience:Minimum of three years full-time experience in the practice of municipal law or municipal code enforcement.Education/Training:Graduation from a State of California or American Bar Association (A.B.A.) accredited School of Law.License(s)/Certification(s):Valid Class C California driver's license.Admitted to practice law in California and United States District Court (U.S.D.C.), Central District.Membership in the California State Bar.Note:
