is the civil law division of MPD. CL was formed in 2016 in response to the growing concerns related to the collateral consequences of being justice involved and the disproportionate number of people of color suffering under these consequences. CL has both a civil law and an immigration law team. CL’s specialty is diminishing the downstream effects of criminal justice system involvement. We represent people from the community who have previously encountered the criminal justice system, as well as other vulnerable and underserved populations in Portland and Multnomah County, to remove barriers to housing and economic stability. We also advocate for systemic changes to help Oregonians previously involved in the criminal justice system.This Position:CL is searching for a Staff Attorney to join our Civil Team.

The Staff Attorney provides legal representation to clients comprising of criminal barrier reduction (such as expungement, felony reduction, fine and fee waivers, driver’s license reinstatements), tenant’s rights (eviction defense, advocacy, and eviction expungements) along with other civil legal services (including public benefits and navigation of open cases and court systems). The position may include working on a specific contract or grant, to be determined. All Community Law positions are contingent upon funding.Compensation:This position pays $74,825.00 - $105,286.00 per year. Staff are members of a union. This is a full-time exempt position. In addition to compensation, MPD also offers:Medical (choice of PPO or HDHP), Dental (choice of PPO Base or PPO Enhanced) and Vision – 100% employer-paid-for employee-only coverageFlexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA)Basic Life, STD, LTD and AD&D – 100% employer-paid401(K) – MPD will contribute 6% of annual salary with full vesting after the completion of 5 years of servicePTO – 24 hours upon hire and accrue monthly to 80 hours and increase 120 hours at 24 months10 observed holidays + 2 floating holidays (summer and winter)4 Mental Health Days per yearSick Leave – 48 hours upon hire + 48 hours after the completion of six months of employment and accrues 96 hours each service anniversary datePosition Qualifications:Demonstrated commitment to justice for low-income, vulnerable, and marginalized individuals and households, and an ability to approach clients with a non-judgmental, trauma-informed lensDemonstrated cultural competence and sensitivity in working with diverse clients, communities, and colleaguesCreativity and flexibility in solving problems and meeting challengesOregon bar admission or eligible and awaiting admissionExcellent written and oral communication skillsAbility to appear in Portland metropolitan area courts in person if required by the courtPosition Preferences:Prior litigation experience (administrative and/or court proceedings)Experience representing low-income clientsExperience with any of the legal issue areas this position encompasses, including criminal law, housing law, consumer or public benefits lawAn understanding of the economic and systemic issues our clients faceWork Environment:CL fosters a work environment that is friendly, cooperative, and respectful.CL has a fully remote work environment with the option to work in our downtown Portland office if the attorney desires or if court appearances so require.Attorneys work 40 hours per week and possess a willingness to work occasional irregular hours to meet the needs of clients.Diversity and Inclusion:
