What You Will DoThe Focused Experiments (M-3) Group in the Dynamic Experimentation (M) Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory are national leaders in conducting dynamic experiments, often driven by high explosives, that require a variety of advanced measurement techniques to diagnose. Diagnostics include fiber-optic systems e.g. Photon Doppler velocimetry, and imaging techniques such as high-speed framing cameras or low energy flash x-ray systems. The successful candidate will support data acquisition for M-3's diverse customer base and contribute to research and development to drive forward the state-of-the-art in one or more of these areas:For explosives tests fielded at M-3's firing sites, deploy, operate, and acquire and analyze data from fiber-optical diagnostic systems such as Photonic Doppler Velocimetry (PDV), MPDV (Multiplexed PDV), TOAD (Time Of Arrival Diagnostic), and CFBG (Chirped Fiber Bragg Grating)Deploy, operate, and acquire and analyze data from optical and/or radiographic imaging diagnostic systems such as high speed framing cameras, streak cameras, video cameras, low energy flash x-raysDevelop diagnostics and diagnostic techniques that are effective in these extreme environmentsSalary RangeScientist 1 $90,000 - $147,100Scientist 2 $99,200 - $164,100What You NeedMinimum Job Requirements:Scientific Background : Demonstrated knowledge and experience in laser, optical, radiographic, detector technologies or other relevant fields.Technical Skills : Demonstrated skills in experimental data acquisition and analysis and a willingness to learn how to field diagnostics at a firing site.Collaboration : Demonstrated ability to collaborate and work effectively in a team environment.Communication : Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills, e.g. formal / informal publications and reports.Ability to obtain a DOE Q clearance, which usually requires US citizenship.Additional Job Requirements for Scientist 2:Project Development : Demonstrated knowledge and experience in designing, planning and executing research and development projects. Familiarity with development of new methods, techniques or approaches to address critical technical problems.Communication : Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills, e.g. authorship on peer-reviewed publications, conference participation, presentations.Mentorship : Demonstrated ability to share technical knowledge with colleagues and provide technical direction in a collaborative environment.Education/Experience at lower level:

Position requires a Bachelor's degree in a STEM field from an accredited college or university and 2 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.Education/Experience at higher level:

Positions requires a Bachelor's degree in a STEM field from an accredited college and university and 4 years of related experience, typically with post-doctoral research experience at a university or national lab or equivalent experience directly related to the occupation. The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
