JUSTICE BUS FELLOW/ATTORNEYNeighborhood Legal Services seeks candidates to apply to join our team of dedicated civil legal advocates as Neighborhood Legal Services' Justice Bus Network Fellow/Attorney.We are seeking energetic and dedicated individuals who have a passion for innovation and commitment to increasing access to legal services for low-income Western New Yorkers. In addition to public benefits, housing security, and disability/healthcare work, Neighborhood Legal Services, Inc. seeks to expand our clinic program work in the areas of criminal record change and collateral consequences.Justice Bus Fellow/Attorney Position OverviewThe Justice Bus Fellow/Attorney will work to carry out the mission of the Justice Bus program by increasing access to legal assistance for individuals challenged by poverty and disability through community outreach, legal education, and legal assistance and advocacy. The attorney hired will work from Neighborhood Legal Services' Buffalo office and will coordinate and staff community outreach programs and events throughout the Neighborhood Legal Services' five-county service area.Qualifications:Required:Juris DoctoratePreferred:New York State Bar MembershipPrevious experience working with low-income and/or underserved communitiesSecond language fluencyLegal services background or knowledge of general civil legal workWorking Conditions and Physical Requirements:Work in an office environment, including working at a shared workstation, attending meetings;Traveling to community outreach events, meetings, presentations, and hearings off-site;Use of computer and other office machines such as fax, photocopiers, and telephones;Ability to work in the evenings and weekends as required to serve clients;Ability to occasionally lift 25-35-pound boxes.Responsibilities and Core Competencies:A commitment to learning the substantive area of law required to supervise legal clinics;An ability to manage a personal caseload that requires follow-up from legal clinics;Conduct community outreach events, education, and presentations to the public;Ensure that all written work product is grammatically correct, carefully edited, well written, and appropriate for its audience;Develop relationships and engage in collaborations with public and private community partners, including governmental agencies, courts, and community-based organizations;Enthusiastic to conduct tabling in communities while providing legal information and/or advice;Demonstrated experience as a self-starter, with a history of independently managing projects;Strong personal work ethic and ability to organize time, manage diverse activities, and meet critical deadlines with minimal supervision;Excellent writing, editing, and proof-reading skills, with ability to be detail-oriented;Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work collaboratively with a dynamic and multi-sector team;Demonstrate cultural competency to work with low-income clients across the spectrum of diversity;Familiarity with the diverse communities is a plus;Strong commitment to pro bono as a strategy for increasing access to legal services for low-income individuals and families.Salary and Benefits:$58,000 to 80,000 per year salary (law graduates pending admission are welcome to apply).Full-time position with a 35-hour work week and shorter summer hours.The company offers a comprehensive benefits package to its employees, including health, dental, and vision insurance, 3 weeks of vacation time, 12 paid holidays, and a paid week off between Christmas and New Year's, access to sick and personal leave, and eligibility for public student loan forgiveness.NLS Overview:Neighborhood Legal Services (NLS) is the largest provider of civil legal services in Western New York, with a central office in Buffalo and offices in Batavia, Lockport, and Niagara Falls.
