This position will be filled at either the Scientist 2/3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

WRS is looking for Developers for our growing Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML) application development team. In this role you will work as part of a team to support AI and ML research projects with software development tools and processes within the Weapons Physics Directorate (ALDX) and Weapons Engineering Directorate (ALDW).

Scientist 2: $99,200- $164,100

After initial onboarding and training, contributions to AI/ML developmental tasks within WRS entails one or more of the following job activities:

Researching, analyzing, developing, implementing, and testing AI/ML solutions and infrastructure which leverage WRS resources to carry out the weapons mission at LANL.Evaluate and implement solutions within scientific software engineering teams within the area of weapons physics research.Evaluate and implement AI and ML solutions to allow weapons programs related to weapons physics and production to effectively manage their data and internal processes.Efficiently leverage modern professional software development practices.Installing and configuring AI and ML software tools in support of weapons programs across the LANL weapons directorate.

Scientist 3: $119,200 - $201,100

In addition to what was outlined above at the Scientist 3 level, one or more of the following job duties are consistent with the higher scientist level:

Collaborate with project leadership and team leadership to propose and lead in the design of innovative AI and ML project solutions internal WRS resources and processes within the Weapons Physics Directorate.Work independently on projects that require AI and ML experience which would require close collaboration with subject matter experts in this area.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Technical Knowledge

For this role, you will need knowledge and experience in developing and evaluating the effectiveness of AI and ML solutions on large data sets. You will need experience working with programming languages which include troubleshooting and working with software compilers and linked libraries, as well as experience integrating multiple data sets and building functional products that utilize AI and ML techniques.

Technical Development

You will need experience establishing and supporting solutions to support software development projects. This includes supporting software development infrastructure. You must have experience establishing and managing code repositories for production development efforts.

Tools / Technologies

You will need experience working with development tools and technologies, including:

Atlassian (Confluence, Jira)Gitlab CICD (Jenkins CICD is optional)Common Linux/Unix utilitiesC, C++BashPythonQT

Collaboration

To succeed in this role you must have the ability to work independently and in a team environment to analyze problems, propose solutions to management, and deploy and document implemented solutions.

Scientific Software Development

To succeed in this role you will need the following:

General understanding of using AI/ML to gather knowledge from large data sets, including but not limited to NLP from digitally archived data.Understanding on how these types of projects can be integrated into a research environment as a production ready tool.Understanding into how these types of projects can be integrated into various user interfaces solutions in the following forms:UI/UX solutionsCommand line utilitiesWeb hosted solutions

Computing Environments

You must have knowledge about working in classified and unclassified computing environments.

Linux/Unix

You will need a working knowledge of key Linux/Unix user related tasks including:

Additional Job Requirements for Scientist 3:

Intermediate Technical AdministrationAt this level some experience in the following is preferred:Gitlab project and repo administration/configuration.Mentoring experience of students, postdocs or early-career staff.

Intermediate Technical Contributions:

At this level any experience and software contributions related to the below topics are:

Testing and development experience with AI/ML tools on large data sets.

Ability to evaluate the effectiveness of:

Development within containerized applications and deployment of those containerized applications.

Education/Experience at Scientist 2: Requires a bachelor's degree in a STEM field from an accredited college and university and 4 years of related experience, typically with post-doctoral research experience at a university or national lab or equivalent experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at Scientist 3: Requires a master's degree in a STEM field from an accredited college or university and 6 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

Physics and or Mathematics (Education or advanced research in these fields)Experience applying AI/ML tools

An active DOE "Q" Clearance

An active DOE "SCI" Clearance

Work Environment:

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details:

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance:

Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance, and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
