Position Summary -Typical schedule: 1:30pm to 3:30pm, approximately 10 hours per week

Responsible for transporting children in a YMCA vehicle to and from the YMCA and their school. Provide supervision and ensure the safety and general well-being of the children.

Essential Duties

Include the following. Other duties may be assigned:Check children on and off the van using a YMCA van attendance record. Check children in with an adult at each school's out site and school.Supervise children at all times, bringing them into the school when you need to pick up or check on other children. Never leave children unattended in the vehicle.Shut off the van when picking up or dropping off children. Take the key and lock the vehicle.Welcome each child to the YMCA vehicle, and assist with opening and closing the van door as children board and depart the van. Ensure that the children are wearing seat belts.Check to make sure the van is clear of all individuals or any obstructions before it departs.Maintain order, discipline, and noise level to avoid interference with driver concentration and ensure safety. Pull the van over when disciplining disruptive children.Ensure that no food or drink is allowed in the van.Drive the YMCA van in a safe manner obeying all traffic laws and YMCA procedures for operating a child care vehicle. This includes keeping headlights on when driving, using flashers when picking up and dropping off children, and not turning right on red with passengers.Pick up notices, phone messages, attendance books, and first aid and emergency kits prior to starting en route. Plug in and turn on the phone. Ensure that the fire extinguisher is kept current.Check the van to ensure that no child or items have been left on the van prior to departure from the school or site.Service or fill the van with fuel without passengers.Work to ensure a risk-free environment for the children, cautioning them regarding unsafe practices and conditions.Report maintenance or safety issues to the Program Director or Site Coordinator. Report all irregularities in the route. Report accidents and injuries and complete incident reports.Ensure that all vehicle checks are done daily. Record mileage, gas, and maintenance problems. Van must be cleaned after each use.Work closely with school personnel with regard to transportation needs and the safety of the children.Work in harmony and cooperation with all appropriate staff, volunteers, and members of the YMCA.Arrive on time and prepared for constant concentration and visual surveillance of passengers with no distractions.Understand that you represent the YMCA and maintain a positive disposition, demeanor, and attire. Treat children with dignity and respect, recognizing their individuality and diversity. Demonstrate the character development values of honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring.Attend staff meetings, events, and training as requested.Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

High School (GED) PreferredClean driving recordRI chauffeur's license or MA 7D certificate (or ability to obtain prior to employment)Ability to anticipate, identify and address members' needs to ensure safety and enjoyment. To accurately complete all required paperwork. To professionally handle and or get help to resolve conflict. Ability to follow instructions as given and/or directed by supervisor. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
