Position Description

The Chief of Anatomic Pathology, reporting to the Chair of the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine, will oversee all aspects of Anatomic Pathology services at UCI Health. The Chief will lead a division of general and subspecialty-trained pathologists who are dedicated to clinical service, research, and education. In addition to ACGME-accredited residency and fellowship programs, division faculty educate and mentor non-ACGME pathology fellows, medical students, and PhD students in Experimental Pathology, along with affiliated teaching faculty at the VA Long Beach Healthcare System, Children's Hospital of Orange County, and the Orange County Coroner's Office.

The Chief of Anatomic Pathology will be a full-time (100%) faculty member. The academic appointment may be in the Health Sciences (HS) Clinical or Clinical X series, depending on experience and extent of research and teaching effort. Both HS and Clinical X faculty provide patient care; teach fellows, residents, and medical students; perform public and University service; and contribute to scholarly activities. Clinical X faculty are expected to conduct more substantial research and have demonstrated excellence in teaching. An academic appointment in the Clinical X series confers membership in the UCI Academic Senate.

The successful candidate will hold an MD, DO, or MD/PhD degree; be board-certified in Anatomic Pathology; and have or be eligible for a California medical license. Candidates with demonstrated excellence in subspecialty anatomical pathology practice and leadership will be highly considered. The Chief role requires excellent communication and relationship-building with clinical colleagues, managerial skills, strong interest in service activities, a commitment to education, and a record in clinical and/or translational research that may be collaborative in nature.

In addition to leading the Anatomic Pathology division, the Chief will be a key departmental and institutional leader for UCI Health, a clinically integrated system that includes the 400+-bed tertiary/quaternary care Douglas hospital, two Federally Qualified Health Centers, multiple outpatient sites, and several new assets: a new hospital complex on the Irvine campus; a new rehabilitation hospital (opening in 2025); four local hospitals and associated assets that were recently acquired from a national health care system; and a network of outreach referral laboratory clients. In joining the only academic health system in the nation's sixth-largest county - with a population of 3.4 million (and catchment area of 4.7 million) and one of its most desirable in which to live, work, and recreate - the Chief and AP Division have tremendous opportunities to grow and build their reputation both internally and externally.

UCI Health is home to several NIH-funded centers, including the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center (CFCCC), Institute for Clinical and Translational Sciences (ICTS), Alzheimer's Disease Research Center (ADRC), and Sue and Bill Gross Stem Cell Research Center (SCRC), and has invested heavily in its research and clinical trial infrastructure, including a 215,000-sq-ft wet lab research building under construction and a large new state-of-the-art cGMP facility. Earlier investments have supported a notable 16% annual increase in research awards over each of the past five years. The School of Medicine along with the Samueli Institute for Integrative Health, the Sue and Bill Gross School of Nursing, the School of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences, and the Joe C. Wen School of Population & Public Health make up the UCI College of Health Sciences. Founded in 1965, UCI is a top-10 public university according to U.S. News & World Report; Minority-Serving Institution (MSI)-designated as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) and as an Asian American- and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution (AANAPISI); and Orange County's second largest employer, contributing $7 billion annually to the local economy and $8 billion statewide.
