Phlebotomist

in the

Nursing Inpatient Phlebotomy

department. Here, you will be responsible for drawing blood at UChicago Medicine under minimal supervision. The phlebotomist will verify orders, generate specimen collection labels, and confirm patient identity prior to specimen collection.

The Vascular Access/Phlebotomy Technician is responsible for drawing blood from inpatients and starting peripheral IVs as needed on patients in various locations under minimal supervision. Includes patient and order verification and generation of specimen collection labels.

Essential Job Functions

Performs venipuncture and skin punctures with expertise and in a customer service-oriented fashion, adhering to all established policies and procedures.

Properly packages specimens for delivery through the pneumatic tube system.

Stocks blood drawing carts and keeps cart and area clean, safe, and sterile.

Use of handheld system to identify patients, indicate specimen collection status, and generate specimen collection labels.

Plans the delivery of IV access for patients in coordination with the healthcare team.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

High school graduate or equivalent.

Must have current CPR training recognized by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.

Ability to follow oral and written instructions and perform a variety of patient assistance without direct supervision.

Ability to interact effectively with patients, clinical staff, and the general public.

Phlebotomy qualification would include one of the following:

C.N.A. with phlebotomy certification.

M.A. with phlebotomy certification.

EMT-B.

EMT-P.

Preferred Qualifications

IV insertion and IV certification.

IV access with Ultrasound trained.

Training in phlebotomy from an accredited program.

One-two years of practical experience with references.

Thorough knowledge of asepsis; manual dexterity and accuracy.

Ability to follow directions and established procedures with attention to detail.

Demonstrate ability to utilize institutional computer systems.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills required.

Position Details

Job Type/FTE: Full Time (1.0 FTE).

Shift: Night Shift (10:00 pm - 6:30 am).

Work Location: Hyde Park Campus.

Unit/Department: Nursing Inpatient Phlebotomy.

CBA Code: Non-Union.

In this role, we anticipate that you will generally work approximately 40 hours per week. The days of the week that you are scheduled will vary depending on the week, but we anticipate that you will be scheduled to work on rotating weekends (Saturday and Sunday) and Holidays.
