Job Summary:The Surgical Scrub Tech III works under the supervision of the Clinical Supervisor and is responsible for helping to prepare the OR, scrubbing with the Surgeon, and scrubbing surgical procedures and GI. First assisting for retina procedures at contracted facilities. Participates in and actively assists the surgeon in completing the operation safely and expeditiously by helping to provide exposure, maintain hemostasis, and serve other technical functions.Essential Responsibilities:Preceptor of all new technicians, providing training on new equipment and patient care services. Assists in the ongoing process of healthcare delivery to patients incorporating age-related and developmental specific requirements. Provides technical skills assisting the surgeon and operating surgical equipment in a safe efficient manner.Provides technical assistance to the surgeon in completing surgical procedures safely and expeditiously.Pre-Surgery: Set up surgical equipment, instruments, and sterile supplies and ensure the equipment works properly.Prepares patients for surgery by shaving, washing, and disinfecting incision areas. Assists in transferring patients to the operating room and helps to position them on the operating table.Intraoperatively: Pass instruments and sterile supplies to the surgeon and surgical assistant. Helps to keep track of needles, sponges, instruments, and supplies. Cuts sutures and holds retractors. Manages specimens taken for analysis.Postop: Helps transport patients to the recovery area. Prepares instruments for sterilization. Cleans the operating room and restocks it with supplies. Prepares the operating room for the next case.First assisting retina surgeries at contracted facility.Covers call rotation after hours and weekends.Performs two training in-services for staff per year.Other duties as assigned.Basic Qualifications:ExperienceMinimum one (1) year acting as a first assist.Minimum five (5) years of experience scrubbing in an OR setting.Minimum three (3) years scrubbing Ophthalmology cases.

EducationHigh School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.Graduation from a recognized Surgical Technologist Program required.

License, Certification, RegistrationSurgical Technologist Certificate within 12 months of hire.Basic Life Support required at hire from American Heart Association.

Additional Requirements:Maintaining medical staff privileges at contracted facility.Maintaining personal liability coverage for first assist duties in compliance with medical staff privilege requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:Certification in Professional Association that Certifies Surgical Assistants (SAs) including National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTA), Association of Surgical Assistants (ASA), National Surgical Assistant Association (NSAA), American Board of Surgical Assistants (ABSA) preferred.Minimum three (3) years of experience working in the OR assisting with cataract and glaucoma surgeries.Graduate of an accredited program in Surgical Assisting recognized by the Commission of Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).
